Question about discrimination and politics

Sorry for another thread.

I saw this well written article on FB, gave me another perspective and wanted to reply but held back cause I prefer not to debate on FB.

So question for all on bere but especially for Trump supporters/Republicans:

When someone you know (family, friends, colleagues)or makes a comment about someone because of their immigration status, race, ethnicity, gender, religion, sexual orientation, etc do YOU speak up, defend the group/person and tell the person who made the comment that it is wrong?

Do you stay quiet, walk away?

There is a "safety pin" movement now similar to what they did in England following Brexit, which shows people who is "safe" when they feel discriminated against. Sad that this is even needed. But wondering if the author of this article and all in her shoes would stand up for rights of others?

Question about race and politics

I say something. I'm in a interracial marriage. My husband has had a target on his back since 9/11, and in the last 8 months it's grown bigger. I am very aware of others and can't stand some of the crap I hear. A friend and inwere talking yesterday. She is married to a black man, she said unless it personally affects you, you don't see it. I think that is very true.

DH has a friend who makes racist comments fairly frequently. When we are in his home I have stayed quiet but have made it a point to get up and remove myself from the conversation. When he is in our home I have told him that that type of language is not permitted in our home. The first time or two I think he thought I was joking. He now knows that I will not tolerate his hate speech in my home.

And I have told DH how much it bothers me to be around him in general and that there is likely to be a time in the not too distance future that I just get up and leave. DH understands how I feel but insists that his friend has been there for him in some bad times and would do anything for him (or me). While that is true, it is not enough for me to overlook his racist comments. He is truly ignorant and I could never be good friends with someone like that, no matter how much they were "there for me"

I will say I have not always spoken up. I felt that sometimes it wasn't worth the drama that would ensue. At work the repercscared me. But I will say that part of me is gone. I will no longer remain silent to keep the peace. It is my duty to stand up for those that may feel they cannot. This election has spurred me to action. I am still undecided on how I will use my voice but I am deep in the process of finding the right road!

I grew up with very little struggle in my life and feel very lucky for that. But that doesn't mean I should sit back and not help others. I need to use what I have been given for others.

If I am directly in the conversation, I'll *always* say something.

If I just overhear it, it depends on the situation. I would not dive into an overheard conversation at work or on public transportation. I used to and I have been physically assaulted because of it. People are too crazy- I need to keep myself safe for my daughter's sake.

Thanks for the honesty. I do not always speak up when there are undertones from what people i know say. The reason i dont is because i will get so emotional it wont be a good scene.

What i do is not mingle with negative people unless i have to be in their presence

Now waiting for some of the posters on the other political threads to come here and share...
