I'm sorry, but I don't think this is a teachable moment. At. All.
What? Teach others that it's OK to make racist, misogynistic comments, promote rape culture, insult others, etc. (too much to list, TBH) and get elected. Teach that respecting opinions like racism is OK.
I do not have kids, but I do teach university students (American studies), as do my colleagues. This isn't a teachable moment.
Nope, that's a big old nope.

It is a great teachable moment
I am using this as a teachable moment. What exactly I do not want my son to grow up and be like.
My sole goal is to raise an amazing son that will be accepting of people's differences. To look past their color, religion sexual orientation. He will learn to love people because they are good people and see that there will always be evil but we do need to let it break us.
I am using it a a teachable moment in my life. As a white female I know very little of what a real struggle is. Sure I have had a little bit in my work environment but I will never know the real struggle of some people but I can learn and work to make sure I do my part in really making this a country for ALL people.
With that said I am fine with a Republican being president. What I am having a hard time with is all the racism, bigotry etc. That I cannot accept from anyone! no matter what party you align with!!!!

I think Trump is going to surprise everyone in a good way. I truly do. I wasn't happy when Obama was elected either time but I accepted without calling names. I was worried about Hillary being elected but would have accepted without calling names.You can't always get what you want, and it's our turn now and we chose change. Now let's see what happens.
I agree....plus if Hillary won, Im going to teach my kids that she did many illegal things and got away with it...nope.

Gross? Really? Because your bitter as hell you have the nerve to say I have no heart? Yeah shes human, and so were her supporters that waited HOURS only for her to make Podesta do her dirty work. If the tables were turned, her supporters would be all over this, calling Trump a coward.

It was a very sticky place to be. Curious to hear how others would guide their teen. Smaller children are less aware, but older kids are extremely opinionated and more informed on the issues than more adults I know.
I'm so glad my kids are young enough that I can try to keep them it of this for now. It's tough. Only thing I would say is it's okay to say you're not sure ands give her both sides of your opinion. It's clearer than ever now that just bc we're grown ups we don't have all the answers.
Eight years ago the very diverse high school I worked at stopped classes so the students could watch Obama's inauguration. It was so inspiring. I can't believe this is where we've ended up.
Ironic.. as we stopped at work for his inauguration and I kept working.. I was singled out and harassed.. GET up, go to the conference room this is historic.. you MUST participate. No I do not. I did not vote for him, I do not support him, I do not have to participate. I am PAID to work here and you have absolutely NO right to force your political beliefs on me. As an American I am given a freedom to believe as I choose and without harassment at work. That is my legal right. My boss had to back off.
Today we have a boohoo yahoo breakfast were we have bagels and donuts for the winners and losers in our office. Supporters of both sides are supporting each other. Either way, we still are coworkers, we still have bills to pay and work to do. Kids to feed and lives to live. That's America. 4 years is another chance to see what we can do.
This is America. The pledge isn't to the president or congress. Its to our country and our ideals as a whole country. I would have stood if it had been Hilary or Trump or the dead gorilla. Because my country is the one my father fought for, the one my sister is fighting for and the one I believe in.
The president isn't my country. My country is made up of many small things. Fighting about politics is actually even one small part. But it is a sum of its smaller parts not just one idiotic election with horrible choices. I am proud of my country and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else regardless of who is sitting in the white house.
I'm sorry bc that's terrible. Of course no one should be forced to celebrate. However, I can't help but think about all the minority, Muslim, LGBT, and even illegal immigrants who I taught and empathize with the concern and fear many must be feeling today.

Trump is also corrupt, he lies roughly 70% of the time, and he bribed at least two state AGs. I'm not saying Clinton hasn't done some bad things, just that you can't say that lying, and corruption didn't win. It's just in a different format.
Many people don't believe their voice matters because of the electoral college. Clinton won the voice of the people, but the system says Trump won. I'm not saying that the electoral college is fixed, or we shouldn't stand by it's outcome, just that it's not 100% the voice of the population.
Also, in non-swing states, most voices aren't heard. Republican votes in NY, and Democrat votes in Texas don't really matter in a Presidential election in the overall scheme of things.

Of course this is a teachable moment. The Presidency is not forever. There are terms set up for exactly this reason. If he sucks, then vote him out in 4 years. Neither side presented anyone that I would want my daughter looking up too.
Things do not change over night. This Presidency or even the next is not going to change the culture in this country. That starts by us the people. When my parents were growing up there is no way they ever would have thought a Black man would be President. They wouldn't be talking about transgender people, they wouldn't even consider a gay marriage but now those things are true and talked about in every day life. It is part of our culture now and it wasn't just because of a President. It is because we are teaching our children to be more tolerant, more accepting and trying to respect others views even if we do not agree with them. If we all do that with our children, just think of what can be accomplished when they are adults. Even if Trump or any other President overturned every single law that you hold dear, it wouldn't matter because the foundation is being built with our children, who in turn will be running the country one day. There is no black and white, wrong or right, people have different moral views and that is ok, but if you teach and promote tolerance and respect that trumps (no pun intended) it all.

i had a very nice conversation with my kids today about winning and losing. and how everyone has their own opinions and it is ok to be different. It was a nice conversation.
I had a similar conversation... but my children and I are going to have to get into longer, deeper ones in the future. I actually wrote a blog post about it...

It's extremely offensive to compare Obama being elected to trump being elected when Obama didn't spend his campaign vilifying and alienating entire groups of people.
People who didn't like Obama were on different ends of the political spectrum and generally didn't like him for his "liberal" views. They also thought he didn't have enough experience.
This is ENTIRELY different than the reasons given for being upset that Trump has been elected.
He's not a Conservative, he just used the GOP to get to the top.
He's a Racist, Mysogynist, Fascist.
And he's an asshole.
Quite different than the whole "I don't like Obama" thing

While I don't think this is the right move for our country I did turn it into a teachable moment for my son. I taught him that you can't always get what you want. We wanted this so bad. I taught him today that you need to stand up for your friends and fellow man if other people are doing things that are wrong and that it is important to be kind to everyone. And I also taught him that the electoral process in this country sucks.
