What to take as a gift if you are a houseguest?

I posted a few weeks ago about DH going to Seattle to visit his widower friend. DH was undecided and is just going to stay with his friend and 2 girls. Would like to get them a very nice gift.

Can you recommend what to buy for 4yo and 7yo girls that are not too bulky?

DH plans to carry on luggage only.

I was thinking fall jackets and sweaters but I know not everyone's style is the same. Maybe something very basic from North Face or Patagonia. I said American Girl dolls for both girls and DH said he doesn't think the girls like dolls that much. The girls don't really wear jewelry so I don't think I want to go that route.

Please help.

We bought my DD and my niece and nephew those cute little Instamatic cameras last year with a mini photo book and film. They loved them and were snapping away for weeks. I still like your American Girl doll idea as well. Even if they are not into them now, chances are they will want one soon enough. They have those new cute WellieWishers that are a little smaller than AG Dolls.

Should I get the 4yo a WellWisher and the 7yo the normal sized doll?

4yo has shoulder length blonde hair and 7yo has long blonde hair.

Should I just get 2 of the same doll but with hair that matches their own hair?

My boys are 2 years apart and if items are different, they tend to fight.
