reflux- zantac not working
DD has acid reflux. She projectile vomits every other day or so to the point where she probably throws up the entire bottle.
We went to a GI about a month ago and dd got prescribed alimentum and zantac. She is very happy all the time, and doesn't seem upset when she spits it all up.
Has anyone had a similar experience with zantac not working? Wondering if I should ask about prevacid or something similar

Re: reflux- zantac not working
Zantac, Prevacid, Axid, or any other med will not prevent spitting up. That's due to an immature digestive system. It just neutralizes the acid so it doesn't burn on the way up.
Both of my children spit up a lot, my older one moreso. He was also on Zantac. They both outgrew it.

How old is she? She might outgrow it, DD used to spit up entire bottles. I never gave her zantac and I would say by 5-6 months the spitting up stopped.

Re: reflux- zantac not working
My sisters little guy used to have this problem. She wasn't in love with the idea of giving him medicine so she went to a chiropractor at the recommendation of her neighbor who was a well respected pediatrician. It was expensive but after maybe 8 sessions, he didn't need any medicine at all. Chiro said sometimes babies are scrunched up and some proper massaging can fix the issues they're having with digestion.

reflux- zantac not working
ds is 5 months old and spits up with every single bottle. So days are worse than others. We are on reflux meds. Every few weeks I have to up the amount b/c of weight gain, so def call and ask about that. he used to cry and be uncomfortable but now hes better and the meds def help but he still spits up.
How much is she drinking? I had to cut back a little in each bottle and that helps too. When I need to up his ounces I do like a 1/2 ounce at atime b/c I know itjust gets spit right back up

she's drinking 5-6oz every 4 hours.. if she drinks 6, she spits up a little more so thats a good point! maybe she just needs more breaks

That seems like a lot of formula for an 11 week old.

Re: reflux- zantac not working
My daughter has severe reflux - we wound up in the ER one night after a particularly bad episode where she refluxed through the nose and mouth, stopped breathing and needed to be resuscitated. They directed us to do the following:
- feedings should be smaller volume and more frequent, vs. bigger feedings spread apart - use a slower flow nipple (she is 10 months and still using a preemie nipple... we are just now switching to level 1 and so far so good) - take frequent breaks for burps throughout feeding - keep the child upright for at least 1/2 hour after each feeding - keep the child elevated on an incline (i.e. with a crib wedge) while sleeping
We treat her with Zantac and constantly re-evaluate the dose as her weight increases, ask the doctor at every weight check if the Zantac dose needs to be adjusted. Our ped. said that if Zantac didn't work, we'd evaluate whether we need something stronger like Prevacid so maybe you're right about that being the next step.
Hope this helps!! Sorry you're going through this, it sounds like such a simple thing but can be awful for a kid to suffer with.

Ditto. If she is not crying she may not need medication. My DS would spit up a lot and I mean a lot but he grew out of it by 8-9 months. We used gerber good start as per recommendation of my cousin who is a pediatric GI doctor.

Re: reflux- zantac not working
DD is 4 months old and has been on reflux meds since 2 months We now call her the happy vomitter!!! She vomits all the time but smiles rather than screams through it all I am happy, she is gaining weight, the doctor is happy Praying the vomit will decrease when she hits around 6 months and her digestive system is a bit more mature
ETA- she use to scream for 12 hours straight all day every day and then pass out at bed time and wake up 10-12 hours later screaming her little head off for at least 12 hours again
