As a general hospital? ICU? Cardiac? OB? NICU? ER? It's a good hospital but it depends what you are looking for.

Really? Interesting. I haven't heard bad things. I know the port partum floor you share rooms which I don't like. I know RN's who work in cardio and they say it's good. The NICU is rated one of the best. ER I find to be less congested. Our Ped also prefers us going to Winthrop over LIJ.

Have you looked at the US News list ?
Winthrop ranks 8 for the NY metro area. The only one that ranks above them & is in Nassau is St.Francis in Roslyn.

it also depends on what services you require, certain illness I would never go to a LI hospital for.

Winthrop as an area hospital is a good option. We live by South Nassau and our ped and GP have said if we ever need an ER and can drive the extra few min go to Winthrop over South Nassau any day. I like Northshore a lot, my cardiologist is based there, and for kids you can't go wrong with Cohen Children's at LIJ.

I would take this list with a grain of salt. Their rating system is flawed and I can tell you that no one in the medical field gives a hoot about this list unless they're a mediocre doctor who paid their way onto it (hospitals can't do that but doctors can).

My grandfather was in Winthrop last year. When they transported him from the ER to his room, I noticed dried blood ALL over the bottom part of the bed  I knew it wasn't his because it was at the bottom end of the bed in a spot where his body wouldn't have touched, so I don't know where it came from or how long it had been there!
He was also seen by a lot of residents, one of whom gave me a heavy dose of antibiotics for a sinus infection, when a sinus infection was the furthest thing from what he was admitted for. When we asked him why he had prescribed meds for a sinus infection, he said because he knew my grandfather was seen by an ENT and they usually treat sinus infections.
And then the next day we knew his PCP had seen him, so we asked the nurse what he had said since we weren't able to speak with him. She opened his chart, looked at it for barely a second and then said "I don't know, I can't read this." and walked away.
I live very close to Winthrop and it was previously what I thought of as my "go-to" hospital if I ever needed, but after that experience I don't think I would go back if I could help it.

I kind of find Winthrop to be run down. My husband went to the ER there last year for Pneumonia and the ER wasn't bad but the wait was forever. My friend had her baby there and the rooms were really old and small. I prefer LIJ , or south Nassau was just redone.
