Baby Food

DD is 6.5 months and we started introducing baby food only about 2.5 weeks ago (we had been doing oatmeal for a while, but I waited on the rest as she's not a huge eater to begin with and only 20% for weight so she's somewhat small - not in height though). Anyway, I digress. Since I work, we have been working on introducing new foods on Saturday since I want to see her reaction. This week, i want to introduce apples. While I have been making my own baby food thus far and freezing (carrots, green beans, sweet potatoes - which didnt go over well), I cant imagine pureed apples freezing well at all - so I dont want to make my own this time.

So my question is -- do I need to buy baby apple puree (i.e. Gerber, earth's best etc.) or can I buy organic no sugar added regular apple sauce and feed it to her....I feel like the regular no sugar added apple sauce should be the same -- and then I can just buy a jar of it.

Thoughts?

Re: Baby Food

I believe that "adult" applesauce is not as smooth in texture. It's definitely a bit more "chunky" than baby food apples

The baby food ones are pureed much smoother.

So the texture might be an issue for a new eater.

Re: Baby Food

I make all of DS's baby food and I've never had an issue with freezing the apples.

I thought it would be watery or the texture would be weird maybe....not sure why, but just seems like it wouldnt freeze well. But good to know

She does well with "thickish" oatmeal so she may be ok with a thicker/slightly chunky apple sauce. If that's the only difference, I may try it.....

I gave my kids regular applesauce no problem. Just make sure there are no added ingredients other than ascorbic acid or whatever the preservative is which is even in the baby stuff.

I originally gave DD the baby applesauce but now she gets the regular 365 stuff from whole foods. She loves the mixed berry one. There is no sugar, it's just apples, berries and water.

Re: Baby Food

I had made all of DD's food when she was little. The homemade apple sauce was fine when frozen. The only "problem" I had was that I was buying tons of pounds of apples only to yield a little bit of applesauce. It was just easier to buy the organic, no sugar added applesauce. Since you are already making most of her food, I don't think the texture should be an issue - it's not like homemade foods are as pureed as jarred anyway.

Applesauce was the first food we tried after oatmeal and I bought organic no sugar added from TJs and she didn't like it. Kept spitting it out. She loved it when I got earths best baby food applesauce. I think it's the texture. Baby food is much smoother. For my first DD, I used to buy the regular applesauce all the time and she loved it sobillvtry again when dd2 is a little older. It's a money saver for sure.
