American Museum of Natural History is good if you're looking for something longer than a carousel ride. Also the Central Park Zoo is great for that age.

Day in the city for my birthday...
The Seaglass Carousel is neat but - it doesn't take that long so I don't know if I would make it a destination if you aren't doing other things in the Battery Park area.

Agreed. However you can do See Forever (One World Observatory) and the new mall and stuff if you're going downtown

With little kids I would do lower Central Park- zoo, heckscher playground, carousel, Victorian gardens if still open, and lunch at Landmarc.

Governor's Island is nice. The ferry terminal is in Battery Park so you can do sea glass and Island, along with One World Trade

Since you will be down there already, the Staten Island Ferry to pass the Statue of Liberty. And it's free!
