Please Help...Need advice regarding a car issue

You all always give the best advice here so hopefully someone can offer some good advice.

My husband came out to his car today to find a spider crack on the screen of his navigation system. He almost passed out. In no way did he do anything to it and the only thing that seems the most rational is to assume that the heat today caused it. Rare, maybe...possible...must be.

I called Toyota to bring it in next week, since he is in warranty but the man pretty much told me it's doubtful that would be covered and that you can't just fix the screen, and we may be looking at $4,000 to $5,000. It is a LEASE! We are SCREWED! I know I have to wait for them to see it, then what do we "try" to do? Call headquarters? To think that we'd have to pay that kind of $ for a lease that's due to go back next June when we didn't do anything is making me sick to my stomach.

Toyota sucks so they'll probably make you pay. Maybe insurance will cover it?

A claim that big I would put thru insurance but not do the repair closer to the lease end.
We did that with some serious scratches, DH's car got keyed, waited a year to fix them when the lease was up.

That price is pretty high. I don't know what you need to do for a lease, but if I owned the car, I would look for a used replacement part or a way to replace the screen.

Hummmm, not so sure insurance would cover it. I mean we didn't do it so since it's a freak thing what would we even say to get it covered? He went over pothole and it cracked? No other damage, so would they even "believe" us?

Yes, IF we owened it, but we don't so we have no choice. My husband's thinking maybe he should just buy the car back, I mean it's a great SUV-2015 Toyota Highlander. Then we could see if there's another option.

This is an article published from Toyota themselves stating that the heat can crack their touchscreen.

Re: Please Help...Need advice regarding a car issue

I also found two other listserv posts where people tried to find independent dealers/ebay vendors to replace their Toyota touchscreen. Might be worth looking into/calling around if they ultimately refuse.

As an aside, a few years ago my Honda's radio stopped working just short of my 7 year extended warranty and they replaced it, no questions asked. I can't believe Toyota is giving you such a hard time. Whatever happened to taking the word of the customer!

Wow, thanks for this. What will they say now, "but only with the Tundra", as this is what this article is about.

The navi on my husband's Acura cracked a few years ago. His mechanic replaced the screen. I think it was still about 1k. Maybe see if that's an option for you?

Thanks, it's a Lease so I'm not sure if we can get away with that.

you do not have to have it replace by Toyota. You can go anywhere you want. The leases do not dictate where you have work done just that the car is returned with only normal wear.
