9 month old gags and vomits...
My 9 month old gags and vomits any time he tries eating food with different textures (solids, teething biscuits, mum mums, puffs, finger foods, chunky foods, mashed up banana that isn't pureed, creamy laughing cow cheese, etc.) He does fine with pureed stage 2 foods (mostly fruits) and that's it. If it has any tiny bit or chunk he will start gagging, spitting out the food, and then throwing up.
Has anyone been through this? Any advice?
Thanks!

9 month old gags and vomits...
Just keep offering small portions. It's a phase.

Re: 9 month old gags and vomits...
He may not be ready. 9 months is still young. My first DS had feeding issues so I have learned how to deal with textures with him. After Feeding therapy, OT and time he's a pretty great eater at 7 years old.
Anyway, it still takes time. DS2 was a great eater and eating a lot by 6- 7 months.
First, don't give Stage 3 foods. It usually causes choking and gaging for babies bc of the hidden textures that they are not used to. Better to go to soft foods after Stage 2.
DS1 was on Stage 2 till almost 3 years old.
Try crushing the puff and putting it on their tongue to get used to the texture. You can also use those gumming utensils that usually come with a toothbrush. The Speech and OT told me they were good to have the baby chew on to get used to textures and wake up the mouth
gum and tooth set
Just give it time and do it slow. Per my Ped they really don't even need food till 1 anyway and all the baby food is just practice for them. Message me if you have any other questions. Good luck!

9 month old gags and vomits...
I'm dealing with this now. DD is just shy of 8 months and is slowly getting better. She's just like your DS- fine with the stage 2 foods but iffy with everything else. I looked into baby led weaning after suggestions on here and I think that's why she's improving. I give her big chunks of food to chomp on (a big piece of plum, banana, broccoli spear, a whole waffle, even a giant wad of scrambled eggs) and am now adding in bits of pasta, potato and I might try meat this weekend.
She gagged on everything at first but now she's slowly getting better. I admit that I'm beyond terrified of her choking and stand over her while she has anything.
She's still not great, but she's definitely better!

My DD was like this too. I think around 11 months is when she finally started to get the hang of eating solids without choking.

Re: 9 month old gags and vomits...
This is very normal. Every child develops their gag reflex (or ability to suppress it?) at different times. Always mention it to your ped, but it's nothing to be concerned about at 9 months.
Don't worry or get frustrated. Keep trying slowly and with small amounts.

Re: 9 month old gags and vomits...
How long has it been since u've been trying to give him food with texture and how long purees? Just like a pp said, some kids really have problems with textures where professional help is actually needed (a friend of mine experienced this) but this is rare. The majority of the time babies have problems with food with textures because they're so used to puréed food, and they have a real tough time transitioning to the point of sometimes even vomiting. I'd keep offering foods with textures and try to limit purees to the max. Don't be afraid to offer him actual solids, let him take his time learning from whatever u're giving him, colors, how it feels, how it smells, etc. and don't freak out if he gags, the body does this to actually prevent choking.
