9 month old gags on everything but purees
DD is 9 months...she gags on everything except purees that are completely smooth.
She'll self feed whatever I give her, but then as soon as it is in her mouth, she gags until she throws up.
I've tried:
puffs Baby mum mums small pieces of chicken Purees with very small chunks Pastina fruit
What else can I give her to help her learn how to gum food or do I give up and try again in a month?
Thank you for your help!

Re: 9 month old gags on everything but purees
Everything you wrote is EXACTLY my DS. He's 8.5 months old and gags on anything other than his pureed babfood. I couldn't have written it better myself.
BTW... I have many posts about him and his "texture" issues. The Ped just said he's not ready and has a problem with textures. SHe said to wait a bit on going to Stage 3 food or any puffs.
I try to give him puffs and he will gum it for a bit with a face like... not sure if I like this whole chewing thing.
Then if he swallows it or goes too close to the back of his mouth he makes the "I can't breathe" face and gags. Then he'll throw up a bit. I've had to quicky pick him up out of the highchair many times. It scares the cr*p out of me. My Ped said don't be surprised if he's a late talker too b/c sometimes it has to do with the muscles in his mouth. I'm not sure about that with Mason b/c he is a big babbler. We'll see.

It scares me too. I have to wait until DH is home to give her anything because I panic. I guess I'll just wait a few weeks and try again!
Thanks!

We had this problem because we introduced food a little too late.
I would start by making the purees thicker, adding smaller lumps in it. Tiny things like Cheerios (even broken up).
Don't give it up - I think it will make it worse if you don't nip it now.

I feel the same way. DH was upstairs when he was choking on a puff last night. That's the last time I give it to him. I want to try b/c he'll try one or two and be ok. His face is always unsure about it b/c he's not sure about chewing on things and then the third one he chewed a little and it went to close to the back of his throat so he started gagging. Weird thing is when he sees me eating he practices chewing on his own so that's when I thought he was ready, but I guess not

Re: 9 month old gags on everything but purees
ds gags on some level 3 purees at 9 months...
the puffs i have had better luck with the ones that look like cheese puffs and i break them into half. gotta watch that they only put one piece in at a time.
purees i have had better luck with the level 3 fruits. horrible time with the level 3 rice ones.
eta... ds also liked these cookies which are made for 1 year olds. i hold it he gums it up scraping it, when it gets softer he then bites off a little piece.

i totally agree... i hear too many stories of babies only eating certain foods. try, try again.

Re: 9 month old gags on everything but purees
I've been through it all too! DS is almost a year old and up until 2 weeks ago, he threw up on everything that had texture... He would spit out puffs if he didn't gag on them. Come to find out he inherited my taste buds and likes salty and sweet stuff, not the plain stuff I was giving him! Ritz and saltines were the first thing he started to like.. now, in these past 2 weeks, he's a new baby!
