Anyone successful in weaning DC off bottles at 12 months?
At my DS' last appointment, my ped said we should wean him off bottles by the time he is 12 months. Well he will be a year on Monday and he more attached than ever to the bottle. He does fine with water in his sippy cup - he'll drink from it all day long. I put milk in the cup and he will start to suck on it until he realizes its milk, looks at me like I have 3 head and gives me back the cup.
Should I push it or leave it alone for now and when he's ready, he's ready? What did you do that was successful?

We did a few weeks after 12 months. What worked for us was finding a soft spout cup, we actually found the munchkin one from Walmart which was less than $2. My son just turned 2 and we transitioned to a regular sippy cup and straw one. Now we are working on the pacifier!

I wish. DD turned 2 in March and she'll only drink milk at home from a bottle. For anyone else, she'll drink milk from a sippy but not at home.

I wouldn't stress it at this point, but I also have a ped who says not to worry about getting them off the bottle until 2. My first DD was done with bottles at around 22 months. My younger one is just about 20 months and is still getting a morning and bedtime bottle.

Re: Anyone successful in weaning DC off bottles at 12 months?
My ds is turning 15 months and loves his bottle. He doesn't want to drink milk from anything else. He'll drink water from a sippy cup or straw but for milk he wants the bottle. I'll give him another month or so but I want him done with bottles in the next couple of months.

As soon as she was off formula, we put milk in a soft spout sippy- I think it was Munchkin brand @ 12 months. She was okay with that- but wouldn't take water from it- only from a straw sippy. Every kid is different and usually you have to try different sippies to find the one that works for your DC. I wouldn't stress it at 12 months, but you can start working on finding one that works.

I wouldn't do it unless YOU want to do it. Your ped doesn't make the decisions, you do.
With DS, we tried a few times, but not successfully until about 2 weeks before he turned 2. It was super easy. DD is 14 months now. She will drink milk from a cup during the day, but refuses to at night. She just whines and cries until she gets her milk in a bottle. So I have no desire to take it away now. I'd rather her drink her milk!

Re: Anyone successful in weaning DC off bottles at 12 months?
I did it very easily with both of my sons at 12 months. In fact, they day they turned 1, I tossed the bottles altogether. With DS2, he really liked the sippy cup with water. For the first few times, I gave him milk in the sippy cup, I held him like I was giving him a bottle and he drank it no problem. Then it just transitioned naturally to him drinking his milk himself.

I wouldn't stress it. My DS was drinking milk from bottles until he was 2... he would not drink milk from any type of sippy cup

Re: Anyone successful in weaning DC off bottles at 12 months?
I went cold turkey with the bottles and switching to milk. I kind of had no choice though because neither of my kids would hold their own bottle and it was getting ridiculous!

Both kids were off bottles around d 9 months. I just started giving them sippy cups. I will say its probably best to just go cold turkey

Re: Anyone successful in weaning DC off bottles at 12 months?
Thanks everyone for their suggestions and advice! I will definitely try different things to get him off the bottle. I know every kid is different so if its not now but later that's ok too.
Its so funny because he would never hold his bottle by himself. He knew how to starting at 9 months but always wanted me to do it. Now that I was trying to get him to not drink from the bottle anymore, he wants to do it and not me.

We weaned dd at 2 years off a bottle. She was stuck with that night bottle. Now she has a cup of milk before bed. Dr said to switch to water when she was younger and dd was not having it. The milk keeps her full through the night.

Re: Anyone successful in weaning DC off bottles at 12 months?
Dont stress it.
DD still had a morning bottle until she was 4. The girl would not give it up. She would use her sippy cup and regular cups at all other times of the day
DS just sort of dropped the bottle on his own around a year but he's 2 and still bfs 5-6 times a week at bedtime.
It is what it is.

I won't have that problem with ds2 but with ds1 I did. The pediatrician we had at that time suggested ds1 should stop using bottles once he turned 1. I didn't actually see it as being bad and ds1 continued using bottles til a little bit after he turned 2. He did it gradually, and although I thought his bedtime bottle was gonna be the hardest, it actually wasn't. I think it was because we took our time getting rid of bottles, not when his pediatrician suggested.

I gave my son the choice of a bottle or sippy cup every night. When he chose a cup I got rid of the bottles.

I agree... Don't stress it. I tried at 12 months and my DD wasn't ready at all. I tried again when she was 18 months and went cold turkey taking the bottle away and to the sippy she went... and that's where we're at right now... Almost 3 years old with a sippy lol! She'll get to the cups when she gets there
