Just a silly vent about road trips

We just got back from Hershey.

We had a GREAT time. Don't get me wrong.

DS was loving it.

But I have to vent about the trip there.

I LOATHE that trip to PA.

I cannot find a good way to do it.

I've tried everything - Harlem River drive to GW, Belt, etc.

I checked the traffic before we left and decided the least shittty way appeared to be through Staten Island via the Belt, 287 to 78 etc.

Not so bad on the Belt but sheer gridlock on SI. For no clear reason.

Coming home was HORRIFIC.

It just makes it so I don't even want to go in that direction anymore. We did Mystic a few months ago and took the ferry and it was so pleasant. No traffic.

This is part of why I love Disney (or any other Florida location.) I could have flown to Florida and back in the time it took me to get to Hershey one way. No idiots on the road, no stressful traffic, no wondering if we will make it to our destination without someone needing to pee, etc.

I am starting to feel about driving certain routes the way some people feel about flying - dreading it.

Vent over. Thanks for reading Chat Icon

Yep. We say that ALL THE TIME. There is no good way to get off LI. Or back on it. Horrific. Once you are into Jersey and PA it's a pleasure. NY is awful.

Our only solution is to leave at 530 am to beat the traffic and get there super ealy and find something to do until.we can check in.
That's the only way to make it more bearable. We tried leaving "after" rush hour once, like 10 am...nope! Construction central. Nightmare!

And of course, that doesn't help on the way home. But it's something

I think it depends on luck and timing.

Dh and I went away to ct Thursday to Saturday and traffic was good. I have gone to syracuse in the past and a 5 hour trips turns into 8 hours because of the Bronx and surrounding area..

I try to leave around 5 am from the tristate area, however that usually does not work with my dh since that is when he tends to go to sleep.

Yep. We went the weekend school go out. I was over it as soon as we hit queens. We did well coming home until we hit NY. I was expected a dead body with the amount of traffic we hit.

Don't get me started on the "are we there yet?" 44848 times.

ITA. I hate it. When we go visit relatives in NJ in the summer we go at off times to avoid what we can of traffic but there is always at least a little. And my kids get car sick so I wind up passing them Dramamine or a puke bucket back there while sitting in stop and go traffic. Good times Chat Icon

I feel your pain. My mom lives in Brooklyn and my recent average travel time is about 2 hours each way (without traffic, it should be about 40 minutes).

Can completely relate - word for word. That's why I now head out the night before the trip really begins and leave after dinner. Yes, I pay for an extra night in a hotel, but it's worth not having to worry about too much car sickness, are we there yet questions and everything else!!

Coming home though is a complete nightmare!

Last year on my trip to Dutch Wonderland, I left at 5am...I got there real early, but like the rest of you, sitting in the endless traffic is crazy. It was tough getting my son up that early, but he was excited and we flew there.
