We have so many. We actually have a trap and catch at least one everyday.

You are trapping chipmunks??? What are you doing with them? That's horrible!

We have a "have a heart trap". We trap them and transport them to a nature preserve a few miles from our house.

I guess you did not know but actually it is ILLEGAL to trap and relocate animals. It's illegal to trap random animals that run into your traps and happen to get caught. You need to stop doing this unless you want to get caught one day. Neighbors do watch and someone will see you one day if keep doing it. And an animal lover will not stand for this.

http://www.dec.ny.gov/animals/81531.html

FROM NYS DEC -

"Relocating an Animal
It is illegal for you to move or relocate an animal off your property. You cannot live trap an animal and release it in a park, on State land or anywhere other than on the property where it was captured. If you need a wild animal removed from your property, contact a Wildlife Control Operator. Relocating an animal can create problems for neighbors, can move diseases like rabies or ticks and can cause unnecessary stress to the animal, so this task must be handled by a licensed professional."

Aside from the illegal aspect, you do realize they can die before you discover them in the trap? That's part of the reason it is illegal. They can die from heat, dehydration, starvation, stress, etc. It is actually illegal to trap small animals and relocate them on another property. And what if by accident you trap someone's cat and it dies in your trap waiting for you to "release" it? Or if you trap an innocent animal just passing by, this is illegal!

Honestly, if you were a squirrel, chipmunk, rabbit, etc, how would you feel locked in a cage until someone hopefully found you? If you live somewhere these animals frequent, it's their home too and trapping them is very cruel. I live in a very wooded area, there is NO reason to trap animals. I moved here knowing they live here too. Even when they try to make a nest in my garage or my gutters (chipmunks have done this to us), I will would NEVER consider trapping them. That's wrong.

You stated you trap animals so nonchalantly. That's actually ILLEGAL and not something so nonchalant you know and education is a great thing. So now you KNOW it's illegal to trap and relocate. And it's illegal to set up traps just to catch random small animals just doing their thing passing by.

Thanks for the info. These are ones (about 5 since the spring) that have gotten into our house/garage (guess I should've said this). One just bit through an electric line. So it's either we use a trap to kill them or keep them alive and move them so they don't get back into our house. I thought keeping them alive was a better option Chat Icon

I didn't even know it was illegal, but of course it makes sense.

Aside from the whole legal thing, I could never dream of trapping an innocent animal in the outdoors and relocate them. They could die. You could be separating them from their mom or their babies.

I honestly don't even see the pint why you would even want to or think to do this?

Mice in your attic, sure knock yourself out.

I agree. It's part of living in a wooded area. Don't live there if you want all wildlife gone from around your home. You cannot just set up traps and see what you catch each day. ILLEGAL.

I agree it's horrible and inhumane.

Ok so you have traps inside your house? This fact changes things. If that's the case please check your traps every hour and release them outside your house. You should figure out how they are getting in and stop them from doing that. Trapping these innocent animals is not a solution..

We had some chipmunks making nests in our gutter down spouts. We just flooded the spouts and eventually they stopped. Then he moved to our garage and we would hear him making sounds at night. Made a nest behind some stuff we had. We just removed the stuff and his nest, and eventually he never came back. I agree, the key is finding out how they are getting in.

Now in my new house, we have a chipmunk hanging out in my gutter again. He has shot out the past few days when I would open the garage door. It's very common. I have seen chipmunks going in and out of other's gutter drain downspouts. It's just so common.

If you are trapping inside, well makes sense you need to get them out of your garage. But please release them right in the back of your yard. You cannot relocate them for various reasons.
