What is the benefit of using one vs booking through cruise website? If the price lowers can you get credit or upgrade like when booking direct?

On board credit and extras. Prices are the same with every travel agent as with the cruise lines.

Cruise price and cruise perks will be same regardless of how you book. What I do is book directly through the cruiseline first if I am booking before the final payment date and pay the deposit. This way, if I need to make changes, I can call the cruise line directly. Just before the final payment is due, I transfer my reservation to Costco so I can get on board credit Costco offers. Once I transfer, I cannot call the cruiseline directly if I need to make changes. Have to go through Costco. If the price drops before final payment is due, they will honor the lower price but you have to make sure you are not going to lose any free perks. I have only cruised on Royal Caribbean and Celebrity but I think this is how it works for other cruise lines too.

With Disney you have to transfer it to a travel agent within 30 days I believe it is. And your cruise cannot be paid in full. They also do not adjust for lower fares (Disney that is). Their prices go up though, not down, unless you book a restricted rate with a GTY room, those are typically discounted and offered close to sailing dates. But you can't adjust a previously booked cruise to that lower fare.

Re: Travel agency's-cruise
I booked both of our upcoming cruises directly with the cruise line. I never used a travel agent on any of my vacations. I thought about going through AAA but the cruise line had a promotion for BOGO 1/2 off as well as low down payment so that is when I signed up. For my cruise in 3 weeks I was able to get onboard credits due to price reduction the day after we paid off the cruise.
I love the fact any questions I had I was able to just call the cruise line and get those questions answered.

One of the benefits of booking with a travel agent is that you have someone in your corner should something go wrong or even just to talk to and ask questions to who knows you and your family's needs.
A great reason to use a travel agent like myself is that not only do you get all of my assistance but you're supporting a small, local business at no extra cost to you!

Re: Travel agency's-cruise
Most agencies will offer some sort of on board perks. My parents book cruises through Costco most often. They give some on board credit. One thing no one seems to mention is many agencies will charge $100 to cancel. Costco does not. Make sure you ask about that. But booking through an agent will usually get you some sort of additional perk you will not get through the cruise line itself. Those perks vary by agency. Some give gift cards, wine, specialty restaurants, most offer on board credit.
