Stop breast feeding and use the bottle only?

My wife was EBF while on maternity leave (3 months) - she went back to work last week so DS has to drink from a bottle.

He is having problems with it.

Should we totally stop breast feeding and just do bottle? This way he will get used to it.

Thanks

Re: Stop breast feeding and use the bottle only?

I don't think it's necessary, unless she wants to stop. My son was 5 months old when I went back to work & he really hadn't had bottles at all before that, so he wasn't used to it at all & just had no interest. For the first few weeks or so, he vcwould pretty much drink nothing all day & just wait for me to come home so he could breastfeed. Then as the weeks went on, he must have realized it was bottle or nothing during the day, so he got used to the bottle & drank a bit more from it, but still got most of his milk from breastfeeding when I would get home.

Definitely not a reason to stop breastfeeding, unless she wants to.

Try wide neck bottles which are shaped more like the breast. It may take time to adjust, but he will.

Let me clarify. When I say stop breastfeeding and use bottle. We mean use breast milk in the bottle.
There's no real reason to actually use the boob right? Breast milk from bottle is the same....isn't it?

I think pumping and then bottle feeding sounds like a huge pita personally. I'd just give him time to get used to the bottle at daycare. When he is hungry, he will eventually drink from the bottle. I find nursing a lot easier.

I wouldn't stop bfeeding either. I'd pump just enough for when I'm not around and bfeed during the time he's with me. A mom bfeeds for much more than just giving milk to the baby, a recent study has found out that there's is an actual interchange of saliva/breast milk during a feeding, the baby's saliva that enters the mom's body through the nipple, let's her body know if there's any specific antibody that the baby needs, then her body produces it and passes it to the baby through her milk. Bonding is another reason, it's such a special/unique feeling, and I've also read that bfeeding decreases chances for a mom to feel postpartum depression.

For me pumping is a pain, I did it for a few times when my lo was 3 months (can't use that milk cause he ended up having a dairy intolerance and that was before I cut dairy from my diet) but then stopped. Now that he's 8 months I wanna start again but only pump enough for the couple of times he's not with me.

It'll def be a bit hard for ur lo to get used to bottles cause all he knows is mommy's breasts. Have u tried bottles that resemble a human nipple? Maybe he'll get used to those?

Yes, you get the same nutrients. Night and day in terms of ease and convenience from one to the other though.

Also, like others said, the moms body produces exactly what the baby needs, and only gets those cues from actual nursing. Finally, many do not produce the same amount pumping as they do nursing.

Like others have said, I would try some different bottles.

Completely agree with this. If ur wife starts noticing differences in quantities when pumping, do not think that's all her body is producing. Quantities between pumped milk that a baby gets and what he gets directly from the breast is not the same. Babies are much better at getting milk from the breast than a pump.

Agree with all this. Give it some time but I would not stop nursing if it were me. Pumping is not fun and can be hard to maintain long term. Nursing on the other hand typically gets easier as you go. Try looking for bottles that are close to mom's shape. Sometimes it helps if they're in a bouncer or somewhere not being held, if possible let different people try. Hopefully he'll come around, it's really not that uncommon.

Thanks for the info, I'll discuss with the wife.

The problem is...DS is averaging about 9 ounces during the day (from 6am to 9pm). That seems very low for a 3 month old.
We are worried he is going to be dehydrated and so on.

We are using the Doc Brown glass bottle.
We had a Tommy Tippie and also another 2 bottle brand from DD (she only liked the Born Free, but they don't make those anymore so these 3 bottles were barely used). We tried those 3 and same result...he keeps pushing the bottle out with his tongue.

When I have time I'm going to put up another post looking for help concerning this topic.
DS is totally wacky, lol...he HAS to be held ALL THE TIME. When you hold him he is smiling and sleeps soundly. You can move him around, pass him from person to person and he stays asleep.
The moment you put him down (doesn't matter if he was sleeping for 1 minute or 1 hour) - the second you put him down, he wakes and cries. lol.

If you put him down while he is awake, he starts making noise.

I don't think its a gas/acid reflux issue because, when hes being held, sometimes, hes flat, sometimes upright, sometimes even slightly downward, he doesn't care.

My wife has resort to either sleeping sitting up while holding baby on the couch or sleeping with him on her chest. If we try putting him down in the bassinet or bed or changing pad or floor, he gets mad.

=)

Re: Stop breast feeding and use the bottle only?

My son was the same way. I tried to get him used to a bottle a week or two before I returned to work and I had the same problems. I tried many things - having someone else feed him - if it was me he wanted "me". We tried many bottles and the only ones he took to were The First Years Breastflow bottles.

ETA: Pumping was the worst thing about BF'ing in my opinion. I would keep trying different bottles until the baby finds one they like.

Dd liked avent bottles-they have a much wider nipple than the dr Browns.

As for the 9 oz, some babies will eat less from the bottle and stock up when nursing. That is a low amount for 3 mo though. How is the diaper output? Is the baby gaining?

Yes, some babies eat more, others less, and just like evrythng said, if babies for whatever reason won't eat enough during the day, they'll eat more at night. I'm guessing ur wife bfeeds during nights?

Wet diapers (even more than dirty ones) are the best indicators if baby is having enough milk. If I don't bad remember a normal amount would be 5 to 6 wet diapers in a 24 hr period.

DS does have wet diapers so he must be getting some milk...

We actually went to the doctor because we were concerned he was getting dehydrated. (sunday all day he drank about 10oz and overnight he only did 4 oz)

Doctor said he is not dehydrated but he has dropped on his weight percentage (he was X percent but now he is Z percent).
He said it will work itself out and the baby will stock up at night.

Only problem the doctor said is...at this age he should be getting ready to sleep through the night, therefore he would not get as much opportunity to stock up.
