Flying with a lap baby
Has any one used one of those vests that attach to your seatbelt for a lap baby? Specifically baby b'air. Is it necessary do you think?
It's our first time flying with our kids and I'm now getting nervous about having a lap baby.

I have flown with my DS as a lap baby a few times, and planning on flying with my DD as a lap baby in a few months. How long is the flight? Our flights were pretty short so I just held the baby on my lap with no type of belt and it was fine, they fell asleep for most of the ride. If it is a long plane ride then I would probably just buy them a seat and bring the car seat on.

Flying with a lap baby
Dd1 was a lap baby at 4 months. I held her at take off and landing and the rest of the flight I wore her in a carrier and she slept the whole time.
We bought her a seat at 17 months. I couldn't see us dealing with her being on our laps. Plus we had her car seat and it was great.

How old is the baby?
I would probably just get a seat. I know it's not the popular opinion to have to pay for those under 2, but the harnesses aren't approved for take off or landing, and god forbid you hit turbulence and your baby becomes a projectile...

I flew a ton of times with my DS as a lap child. I just held him. I had no issues.

we went to kansas city and the flights are typically not full, it was also off days for flying.
we didnt pay for a seat but we ended up getting one both ways.
(southwest)
i panicked 2 days prior that we wouldnt get a seat and tried to buy one but the "infant discount seat" is really just .... regular price.
we lucked out but if there is ANY chance the flight might be full (all florida flights, most major cities)- BOOK A SEAT and early!!
DS was 10.5mo. i think younger would have been OK to hold, i think older (now) would be HELL.

I flew with them as lap kids and no issues. The plane gives you a seatbelt to attach to yours to put around them. Good Luck

i flew when dd as a lap baby when she was about 4 months old...no harness or anything and she was fine. When i flew with her again and she was old (but still under 2), i got her a seat.

We are flying to Florida next Wednesday during spring break lol so I'm sure the extra seat is out

People just think "oh, cool, I don't have to pay" and forget that they are flying 30,000 feet at 600 miles an hour.
Maybe because I have been in BAD turbulence, but I would never, ever just carry a baby on a flight.
OP - if it's too late, just do the best you can. Harness her to the best of your ability and pray for a smooth flight.

Yea unfortunately I don't fly much at all, so I didn't think about it. Then I started reading about how some want lap babies to be banned etc and I totally get it.

I've flown with my boys as lap children and just placed them on my lap without a vest.
During the flight when they were small I put them in the Bjorn since they fell asleep and I wanted to be able to use my arms.

Domestic airlines don't have this and you are not allowed to use your own seatbelt to buckle baby with you.

I have. It's fine you'll be fine..a little uncomfortable but manageable.... I would look into whether a harnass like that is even FAA approved. For some reason I could see them giving you trouble. I honestly would not worry. Statiaically I'd be more concerned just driving around town with a baby then flying with a lap infant unbuckled.

If you're nervous, I would try to get him a seat. I was happy to have a seat for my 1.5 year old. I was less worried and she slept most of the flight.

I have held DS1 for 2 trip, florida and aruba and I have done the same with DS2 so far as well.
By 1.5 we bought got DS1 his own seat cause he was a pretty big boy and we knew it would be more comfortable for everyone.
i have never attached them to me or used the carseat on the plane. I don't really see any reason to. Certainly not saving a life if the plane goes down!

I don't want to stress out the OP if it's really too late to get a seat because chances are she will be fine.
However, it's not really about if the plane goes down.
It's about bad turbulence which can cause even the strongest person to come off balance or lose their grip on things.
I was on a flight once years ago with bad turbulence and the seatbelt sign came on while my seatmate was in the bathroom. He was walking back to his seat when the plane lurched downward and he fell, slid forward, and hit his head on the base of one of the seats.
He wasn't seriously injured but he did have quite a bump and needed ice.

Not sure if anyone else mentioned it but make sure you have his birth certificate. I didn't realize we needed this since DS didn't have a ticket and we were almost not allowed on the plane.
