24 month old speech

How do you know if your DC needs EI for speech? My DS will be 2 next week and while he does have a decent amount of words and can form some very simple sentences (ex. "pick up momma", "be right back"), it is often very difficult to understand him. We have his well visit in 2 weeks so I will be discussing this with his doctor as well.

Doesn't cost anything to have him evaluated if you're concerned. Sounds right to me, but if he's really hard to understand you can call.

Our ped said that by 4 most people should be able to understand most things that your child says. If he has a good amount of words, I'd probably give him more time. 2 is young.

They don't do articulation with 2 year olds unless other issues are present. If he has a good amount of words then you just need to give it time. Some of the letter pronunciations take kids time to master.

My son was just flagged by his pre-K teacher for articulation. it is something that we are getting evaluated but at 2 he never would have never been approved because he was well within the norms for that age.

At 2 speech changes so rapidly I wouldn't worry yet. Just keep an eye on it.

My DS just had his 2 yr old visit and the ped said by 2 they should have over 100 words and about 50% should be understood by people. My DS also does not articulate too well so he may need to repeat a word several times for a stranger to understand. Def see what your ped says.

I don't think my DS has anywhere near 100 words.

I think I am going to ask his daycare teacher what she thinks as she has frequent day to day exposure with kids his age.

Agree! This is coming from a parent whose son is in speech therapy

He probably says tons but being around him all the time you dont even notice. I have never counted how many my son has but he is constantly saying new words or just repeating like a parrot.

I had him evaluated at 18 months since he really was not saying as much per the pedi but they all develop language at different rates. He started chatting away at 20 months.

you can get him evaluated just so they have a bench mark but I doubt he will qualify. I went through it recently and its very hard and DS did not pass though I feel like he is really behind compared to others his age in his class. they told me to wait till September and then to call the school if he hasn't approved much and see if he qualifies through them. from what it sounds like it maybe easier for them to qualify esp. when it comes to articulating words.

Re: 24 month old speech

I'm no expert but my son's speech therapist told us that the articulation of language isn't expected to be clear and isn't generally addressed until later on (3+ years old) because when they turn 2 they should just be building their vocabulary and learning to put words together into sentences.... and still are often unable to make many sounds clearly (such as "l" or "j"). So while it can't hurt to have him evaluated if you're concerned, it sounds like he's doing really well. When my son turned 2, he could say maybe 10 words at the most & never put them together... now at almost 3 he speaks very well in full sentences & is understandable most of the time. So progress can happen fast! I think your son is probably totally fine.

I agree with the others. Where are you located? I know a good speech group that meets at Adelphi if you are interested.

i'm a speech therapist... your son sounds like he's doing fine for his age!! whats important at 2 is that they are developing words, and using them in the right situations. and starting to put several words together. articulation will come as they do more talking.
The best thing to do at this this age is what we call modeling.

him" "ic uh omma!" (pick up momma")

You say: oh! PICK ME UP, MOMMA"

you're basically just letting him hear how it should sound....giving him a model of it. it really sounds rediculus at first to repeat a lot of what they're saying right back to them.... but its how they learn how it SHOULD sound... AND it also lets them know that you understood what they're saying...

My DD started speaking more at 2 1/2. I was concerned too at 2, and at 2yrs 4+mos, I even spoke to her teacher to ask her opinion and thoughts. I didn't end up getting her evaluated because I was going to wait until she turned 3. We are also a bilingual house and I was wondering if that played a role as well. She's really started speaking these last few months. He probably is ok but like others said, it doesn't hurt to get him evaluated, esp for your own peace of mind.

Thanks everyone! I'm going to hold tight for now and reevaluate in a few months.

I guess I'm most concerned because 4 of my siblings and 1 of my DH's received speech.

One dvd i would recommend is 'teach me to talk'. It has great suggestions for helping a toddler speak correctly. I personally had my son evaluated at 2 years and he didnt qualify for services. At the time, i still felt like he could benefit from therapy and paid privately. Now he will be 3 in June and is having articulation issues. His speech therapist created a book with articulation exercises for me to do with him. We have really seen his speech grow immensely but i would attribute it to us being proactive. Im not sure where you are located, but Adelphi and Kids Therapy in GC have speech groups and the cost is nominal.

My son just turned 2. He only says the ABCs, numbers, shapes, and colors. He doesn't really converse, he just walks around saying the alphabet all day. They are all different!
