Mystic questions - added a ferry question

I just booked one night in Mystic, CT (not alone Chat Icon Chat Icon .)

DS is 6.

Based on overwhelming advice from old posts, I booked the Hyatt Place.

We're doing to do the aquarium definitely.

Other suggestions?

I'm debating about the museum itself. Should we do it or just walk around the seaport?

I feel like the museum might bore my son and I might have crossed it off but we'll be there on my mom's birthday so she'll get free admission. Since that makes it more reasonable, I don't mind as much if it's a bust.

Thoughts on what would be fun for a 6 YO boy?

Thanks!

What museum are you referring to? I've been Mystic a few times and we do the aquarium, walk around the seaport (there's a few activities included in the admission you can do while there) and walk the Main Street (which is very small).

By seaport museum.... You probably mean the seaport. It has a collection of historic ships & homes & actors that are historically oriented.

It's very nice. Def pay admission.

Between that, the aquarium and getting an ice cream on Main Street (by the bridge)... That's pretty much it.

Not to hijack, but is the seaport okay for a 39 week preggo? We're going to be stuck near music for as much as a few weeks with my sister so looking for anything we can do.

Depends on the weather... But yes, I went to the beach & to historical villages at 40 weeks. Just make sure you are near the hospital you are delivering in. Also depends on how you feel at the time.

I don't think a 6 year old would be bored- definitely pay the admission! You can walk along Main St. and also go to Old Mistik Village, which is right off 95. Lots of cute shops and a duck pond.

Definitely go to the seaport and just so you know admission to both the aquarium and the seaport are good for two admissions as long as you go back within that week. It's a great place we have gone multiple times and love it! Shopping at Old Mysticke village is fun as well.

Re: Mystic questions - added a ferry question at bottom

Thanks all!

Yes, the seaport apparently bills itself as "the Museum of America and the Sea." It wasn't clear to me if the outdoor attractions were part of that or not, but now I see that they are. So thanks for that!

New question - Which ferry should we take? We'll be leaving early on a Monday - not the crack of dawn, looking to take maybe an 8:00 ferry the earliest.

Should we go out of Port Jeff or Orient Point?

I am worried about traffic on 95 through New Haven.

I like taking the ferry from Orient.
It's a nice ride out there and once you get off the ferry in CT, it's about 20-25 min to Mystic I believe

Take the orient ferry. Travel time is 1:20. It's a short drive from there and I have never hit traffic on the CT that far out of the cities.

Definitely orient, I would rather do the drive here on Long Island versus Connecticut. Mystic is less than 15 minutes from the ferry.

I guess I'm the only one who prefers the Port Jeff ferry. It's a quick drive to the ferry so you don't have to worry about leaving a ton of extra time to get out east. We took a 7am boat last weekend and got there less than 10 minutes before and drove right on. The drive on 95 is easy. We came back on a Monday and hit a little traffic near new Haven during the afternoon rush hour but it wasn't bad at all.

Re: Mystic questions - added a ferry question

The drive to Orient is so much more scenic than the drive on 95 through Connecticut. If you're not in a huge rush, I would take the Orient ferry. If your goal is to get to Mystic as fast as possible, then Pt. Jeff is probably better. It's not even that much longer driving to Orient.

I've done both quite a few times and one isn't really shorter than the other.

Less chance of traffic for the Orient one IMO.
