Which long island hospitals have the best pediatric care?
LIJ has a pediatric ER, but I think the "best care" depends on what you need. When my DD was burned we took her to the ER there, but they transferred her to a hospital that had a burn unit, so the "best" is what is best based on why you end up in the ER! I was happy with the care at LIJ - they took her in immediately and advised me on how to handle transfer. Hope you never need to use this info, lol.

Which long island hospitals have the best pediatric care?
I've only taken DS to the Pediatric ER at Stony Brook and they were wonderful. He was very well taken care of and they constantly kept us up to date on what was going on. Far better experience than I've ever had at a "regular" ER.

I was very happy with the pediatric ER at Stony Brook, we've had to use it twice. They were really great and it was nice having the little ones separated from the adults in the regular ER.

I live pretty close to LIJ Plainview. A few weeks ago DS had croup and woke up in the middle of the night not being able to breathe. Worst I have ever seen him. We chose Good Sam over Plainview because Good Sam has a ped ER.
My Ped is so close to Plainview and they won't tell patients to go there.

I'd only take dd to Cohen's (not just because it's where her ped is). Unless I lived in Suffolk....then I'd only take her to Stonybrook!

I live 1 mile from Stonybrook, and have taken myself, my husband and my children there. Unless it is a life-threatening emergency, I'd go ANYWHERE else!!! I've run in there...RUNNING...TOP SPEED with a baby in my arms (clearly an EMERGENCY) and had the "guard" give me a slip of paper to fill out for why I was there...and when I scribbled it out quickly and gave it back to him, he waited for the other mother who walked in 30 seconds before me to finish her form, then he sauntered over to the nurse and specfically put mine under the other mother's (that mother was there with a teenager who was walking on their own, and not in any obvious distress). I was there with a 5 month old who's infant seat had just fallen face-first onto a concrete floor. Add to that the fact that nobody there seems to be able to hurry, and work quickly. Another time, DD#2 climbed over my half-wall and fell straight down onto the wood stairs below (about 14 foot drop)...she arrived via ambulance...they wouldn't let me in the back to be with her until I filled out that f-ing slip of paper about why I was there; add to these stories that she is developmentally disabled, and can't speak...yet they continuously insist on asking her questions and expecting an answer and don't listen to me when I tell them what will and won't work for her. When she was 9 months old, she was sick and had a raging fever...had a febrile seizure, etc...they stuck her EIGHT times before they got an IV line in!! And the icing on the cake was when I brought her there because she chewed on a laundry soap pod and they reported me to CPS for endangering her welfare!!
So, no...if not life-threating, I will NOT go there...I've driven to Good Sam and even Cohen's with urgent, but not emergency problems.

We were there in the ER once, almost a year ago and it was a horrible experience in many many ways. Unfortunately, that includes the actual medical advice given and the course of treatment and diagnostics taken. When I shared our experience with others in my peds office and friends in the neighborhood I heard similar stories. The specialists we followed up with were appalled by the information and care we received there and were told the residents and one doctor we saw were actually wrong. Luckily, I had a family member that was a doctor in a similar field with me in the ER or it would have been even worse. I would go to the regular north shore ER before ever going back to cohens.
