my doctor's office is now CHARGING to use the online portal
$30 a year! I was like are u serious right now? Mad. And I refused to pay.
So now when I want my labs, i'm calling your dumb office and making you fax it to me.

Ummm I'll be really honest, I'm usually the first to say a doctors gotta charge what a doctors gotta charge, but I'm pretty certain they can't charge for that per HIPAA. I can look it up when I'm not crawling into bed, but I know if records are sent via electronic format they cannot charge pursuant to HIPAA & HITEC... I am pretty sure that since this is a part of the meaningful use they can't charge. I would say you spoke someone you know who told you that they thought this was illegal and therefore you want to continue to use the portal free of charge as is your right per HIPAA & HITECH

I hadn't thought of this. Well I wonder if they can charge for this "service" since they can still fax/mail you your records. Also some places charge per page for records. But interesting thought!

In order for the doctors to get incentive money from CMS, they need to provide electronic access to their patients. I have NEVER heard of anyone charging to use it. That is just crazy.

Our ped office doesn't have an online portal so I would gladly pay. They take faxes but not emails. I feel they are not part of the 20th century.

It's an NYU affiliate. Are they using EPIC? (It would be called MYCHART).
My dr is NYU/Langone. So I am curious if I am going to hear this too.

No, they are using their own site. I also have a MYCHART login separate from them. I don't know if MYCHART is also going to be charging
