Cuba

Has anyone been?

DH were throwing around ideas for next year and we would like to visit this sooner rather than later before it gets built up.

My brother's fiancee just came back from there, she went for two weeks. She said she enjoyed her trip when I asked her about it, I don't have further details on what they did there though.

I believe some things are OK. My husband says they lifted some stuff and Americans can now go. Could he possibly be *gasp* wrong?

It's legal to go if you go on a sponsored trip. Like for education, music, religion, etc. you have to have an approved itinerary ahead of time by the govt and go with a sponsored group. The US govt needs to approve an American traveling to Cuba and spending money there.

Up until recently you'd have to fly to Miami and take a private charter to Cuba. Traveling to cuba solely for tourism
Is still not legal but now they have commercial direct flights.

I helped plan a Cuba trip for a very very well known celeb couple.

Kling - Don't you live in Germany? If so then I believe that you are fine to goto Cuba with your US passport. I had family friends who went fro the US but they had to goto Canada first.

My Dh's cousin also has gone but he is Irish.

Both the family friend and cousin said it was beautiful and they had a great time. Apparently there are a few all inclusives as well.

Sorry I don't have more details but I would think it is worth looking into.

I was just about to say this. You can go without issues. It's only that you can't fly directly from the US to Cuba.

I thought that applied to US citizens, not to where I flew from?

Thanks!!

ETA: I was also thinking of flying from NY. It would be for New Year's and I may be visiting my family then. If not, then I'll push it back to March of next year and just fly from Germany.

It goes by what passport you're traveling with, not where you fly from. When you arrive in Cuba you have to pay a tax. It's technically not illegal for an American to travel to Cuba its illegal to spend money there. So with paying an arrival tax you're already contributing to their economy. If you had a EU passport then no problem.

People who would fly from Canada, or any other country, would ask the customs agents to not stamp their us passport. If you're "caught" there can be up to a $250k fine and possible imprisonment (which is obviously extreme).

I have not been but I just wanted to add to the discussion.

One of my former patients is from there, he emigrated in the 60s and still has a lot of family there. I asked him about the country now being more open to tourism. He told me that his family has told him that because there are more people coming, that it has put a strain on the food supply for citizens, as the food is being directed towards the tourist areas and restaurants. That alone made me not want to go there. Chat Icon

I have a friend who just came back from there and she loved it. Please note, this person is extremely hard to please and she had nohing but positive things to say about Cuba. Anyway, she arrived to Cuba via Grand Cayman. I believe you dont get stamped so you wont have an issue with your passport. Also, ive read that you cant use any American issued credit cards (do you have a Canadian one)?

Re: Cuba

Just remember Cuba is very much a communist country. Parents of a friend of mine left Cuba when Castro too over and last year finally were able to visit family there. . They had to be approved where they could stay and they spoke about the censorship and how the government rations out food, down to how many eggs each person can have and it was not a lot. They might be opening the country to tourists but they are still an oppressive regime.
