Re: for those that have moved out of state?
we live in Northern NJ, so it's not much different than living in NY.

Absoutely. We live well. I'm a SAHM and I would not be able to be one if we still lived on LI.

We did not move, but looked around and DH would make so much less that though we could buy a home for much less, we certainly wouldn't be living like rockstars, and with lower salaries would want to contribute a greater percentage to retirement, which would make day-to-day living even more difficult.
Thats what I mean... yes housing is cheaper no doubt about it but the salaries are lower so is there really a difference in how comfortable you are? If you can bring a new york salary to lets say- NC, then you would be living like a rockstar but not many people have that opportunity.
I think a lot of people mis understand this. I know quit a few people making NYC salaries down south- we are one of them and don't live like a rock star . We are able to live good. Nice large home, kid in private school, I'm a SAHM, money in the bank, vacations......I see more and more NYC salaries down here than up in NY. good luck

this is the incredible jumping thread
first on NFR, then FHF now on home. ]
I noticed that, too. I thought I was going crazy. Everytime I replied it jumped!

Re: for those that have moved out of state?
I think it depends what you do for a living
personally- I would NOT be able to continue my current carrer anywhere else
but DH could - pay less taxes and make the same or more
but he would have too b/c my carrer is very NY based - except if we moved to High Point NC- then I could probably find work- or I could always be a sales rep- but it wouldn't be the same as my current career- and would be commission based- not salary
we thought about it- but we decided to stay here- and it's not b/c of family- b/c we are the only ones left

Re: for those that have moved out of state?
Right now, it's about the same as if we lived in NY. We live in Fairfield County, CT, which is far from cheap. The rent isn't as high as NYC, but it's definitely higher than LI. Housing prices are also very high in most of the towns around here.
I'm starting a new job in central CT and provided DH gets a job in that area too, we plan to move up there. That area has many beautiful towns, great school districts, and much more reasonably priced houses. Depending on where DH gets a job, our combined salary may be slightly less (or more), but it should be easier to buy a house we like and we'll hopefully live more comfortably.

Re: for those that have moved out of state?
about the same
well we only moved to ct
the house taxes are lower which afforded us a home vs a condo and a decent area vs an OK area
so our mortgage is still huge but the low taxes softens the bow ALOT
if we moved to LI wed have probaby the same size house but in a not great area or a condo in a good area equivalent to our CT area we live in
i will say though that the less sales tax helps (6% here and 0% on clothes under $100)
on the flip side- find groceries and restaurants and nail salons to be more expensive and less deals to be had

Re: for those that have moved out of state?
We moved to RI and it is about the same. We transferred with our NY salaries so we are making more than most around here, however, it is still pretty expensive. Less than LI, but not as much as we hoped. I am shocked at housing prices in particular. I do not know how folks around here do it on less than what we make.

because 5 years ago houses probably cost half of what they do now.
I looked into moving - however FH is a teacher so he would make about half of what he does now. If i could get my NY salary thats a different story - but it doesnt seem like I could
