Splitting the rent
It couldn't hurt to discuss it with them. They may use the argument that you have the whole upstairs and they have the downstairs but you won't know till you try.

Splitting the rent
I would say you should pay more because it's you and your son. It seems like the rent is split evenly between 4 people

Yeah I think that is the reasoning. 2 people using the utilities etc vs 1 each for them

Splitting the rent
I don't think it's fair that you split it 50/50 but you should be paying a little more. When your husband was alive it was 50/50 and since he passed away it should change. Your 6 year old son should not be charged the same price as an adult.

Re: Splitting the rent
I am kinda baffled this whole plan didn't change when your husband passed. Not only should you not pay half but it would be nice for them to consider you are a single provider for your son and that extra $ should be going to him. Is it that you make that much more then them that this consideration wasn't made?

Splitting the rent
I definitely think you should be paying more than your mom and brother but that is just because you are using two bedrooms. I think they should lower the cost somewhat (maybe pay 1/3 instead of 1/2) however because you are now a single parent. Sorry for your loss.

Re: Splitting the rent
They have the bottom part of the house which is the same as the upstairs. They have a dining room too. When we go away on vacations, we split it 3 ways. My son doesn't use as much electricity or water/other utilities. He is in school 7 hours a day. My brother works from home (you have to see our electric bill-- 400/month. More in the summer.) They both run their a/cs year round. We have 2 tvs. They have 3. I have no home phone but pay for theirs... Neither of them drive, so I do all the running around for them/with them. I agree that I shouldn't be paying as much, but I don't think they will see it that way... I would never consider charging for a child to live in a house.

Re: Splitting the rent
So very sorry for your loss
I think the rent should be split by the 3 adults. Have a chat with your mother first to see how she would feel about lowering your responsibility.

I get the same amount of money now then I did when my husband was alive.. My brother definitely brings in more money a month and my mom lives on 2 pensions and ss disability. I also have more money going out of the house every month... $1650/month for health insurance. Car payments, car insurance, my sons therapies.... It has come up a few times, but my brother kept telling me that he paid for him and our mom.... Which was a BIG lie...

Splitting the rent
IMO, they seem to use more electric etc than you and your son. Splitting it three ways is not that much more a person, even if you paid a bit more like $950-1000 that would leave them with an additional $175. Taking into account you drive everywhere etc.

They use a lot more utilities since they are both home ALL day, every day. My son is in school 7 hours a day... They run their a/cs all year. 3 tvs down stairs and an entire home office with 5 computers and 3 servers. I paid $200 for electric last month and we weren't home for the first 12 days.. Electric is $400/month. Higher in the summer.
I would never think of charging full for a kid, but that is just me... I guess before my husband passed away, we should have paid more because it was 3 of us...

Thank you... It is not much more for them... and it would help me a lot to not pay as much. Even if I paid 1000 it would help..

Splitting the rent
I would move out and get my own apartment if they don't want to compromise. The money you are spending you can get your own place.

Splitting the rent
just my thought, the cost people charge for rent in general on LI and NY is outrageous. It does not cost anyone $1300 plus, a month for oil and electric etc.
I do agree, if you can afford $1300 you might be able to find your own place. Give it thought.

Re: Splitting the rent
You maybe should pay a bit more (based on 2 of you) but just a bit if even. No way this seems you are being taken advantage of.

THIS..
the money you are spending in utilities and such you could get your own place.
Is the health insurance just for you? Or can you put your DS on the state program for kids?
Sorry that you are dealing with this :(

Re: Splitting the rent
After reading your additional posts I do not think this is fair. Question is have you talked to them yet about it? Do they help you with your son? If so is that a reason not to move?

I have been looking for months for a place of my own. The cheapest I have found for a 2 bedroom place is 1700+ utilities... It is crazy.... We all moved in together in 2011 to save money for our own home and to help my mom and brother out when they ran into some issues... When my husband passed away, I had to take all our savings to pay for the funeral and what not. Wiped me out... So now I am starting over.... I scrape by most months, so savings has been slow... I hope to find something that will work for us..

Thank you... The health insurance is for both of us and right now my son needs to stay on this plan as it covers everything he needs... He has autism and other health issues... I tried to find new insurance for me that was cheaper (monthly payment) but the copays were so much more... That is where they get you! Unfortunately I was diagnosed over the summer with a heart condition so I need really good insurance too...

They help when it is good for them.. But I take care of him and his needs 95% of the time... I need to make plans way in advance if I need them to babysit or what not... I would like to find a place for just the two of us, but it just isn't working out right now.. Not much out there for us.
