Strep- How many days after antibiotic should there still be fever?
DS has had 103+ since Monday. On Tuesday trip to the ped they said fever virus. When I took him back Thurs, they tested for strep and it was + He has had no symptoms other than fever and has never had strep before. He has taken 4 doses of amoxicillin, but fever is already at 101 today. Does this sound normal?

No. This does not. He should be responding to the antibiotic by day 2. DD had strep 2x in 2015. So sick but by 24 hours of antibiotics she was feeling much better and minimal fever if any at all. Does he have any other symptoms? Does he respond to Motrin or Tylenol? That should get it down to a 99ish level

Re: Strep- How many days after antibiotic should there still be fever?
No other symptoms at all. Fever spikes around 1pm and yes, responds to Tylenol. It hasn't even been going back up in the evening. Very strange. Just spoke to the pediatrician and she said to give it until Monday as long as fever/symptoms are not worse. She said it would be unusual for the strep to be resistant to amoxicillin. Has anyone else seen this happen? I'm just worried something else is causing the fever. The lack of symptoms makes me very nervous...

Re: Strep- How many days after antibiotic should there still be fever?
Sounds ok to me. He started antibiotic Thurs and it's only Saturday. I bet tomorrow morning he will be fever free. Antibiotics take 24-48 hours to start working. 101 isn't too awful, and think of it this way-if there is anything else bacterial in the body, he's on antibiotic so that'll knock it out. If he has something viral, not much you can do but fluids and rest. I'd keep on top of the motrin/Tylenol and not worry too much about fever. It's more about how the child is handling the fever. If they're alert, hydrated etc that's good. If they become lethargic, dehydrated etc then you know to seek further help. HTH!

Wanted to add...strep is one of those very weird illnesses. Some kids (like my eldest son) will only have a stomach age but tests positive every time while some kids can't swallow from sore throat and run a high fever.

It should be down, but it may still not be completely gone. My kids have run temps for 4-5 days with certain viruses/bacterial infections. I know fever can be worrisome but I always remember, fever in itself isn't a bad thing. The body is doing it's job of combatting the infection. It's when it's paired with other stuff and if the child isn't themselves. Best of luck!

One last thing...not sure if you're alternating meds, but I always do the Tylenol/motrin thing. Every 3 hours I give one or the other to keep a higher fever down.

Re: Strep- How many days after antibiotic should there still be fever?
DS began having a fever in the middle of the night this past Sunday. On Monday night, he ended up with a fever of 105.3. We freaked out, went to the ER, and left hours later without even being seen by a doctor. On Tuesday, took him the the ped., was diagnosed with strep and started on antibiotics on Wednesday morning. His fever just stopped on Friday night. So, total was 6 nights of fevers...very high fevers. We alternated with Motrin and Tylenol every 3 hours, gave him lots of fluids, and wiped him down with a cool rag at night while he was sleeping.
He had no symptoms but stomach pain (vomited 3x when his fever was over 103) and fever. Ped. said to bring him back if his fever did not go away by Saturday (yesterday). Luckily it did. How's your DS doing now?

wow- I'm so glad your DS is better! We just had our first fever-free day since last Monday! I was really starting to worry. His fever was spiking in the afternoon, so we were able to give him Tylenol right away. Other than one night, it wasn't going back up in the evenings. He's developed a chunky cough- not sure if it is partly from lying around for the past week, but I'm keeping an eye on that. Fingers crossed that both our boys stay well!

Strep- How many days after antibiotic should there still be fever?
Over the summer, DS 2 had both a fever virus and strep - he was diagnosed with the fever virus first and strep 2 days later. He still had a fever for 2 days after starting antibiotics.
