Grand Canyon

Anyone do the Grand Canyon (and surrounding area) with kids? We are thinking of flying into Phoenix and visiting the Grand Canyon, Sendona, Flagstaff, and then heading over to San Diego to spend some time with my SIL...I know it would be smarter time-wise to do a California trip with San Diego, but I really want to start visiting the National Parks with my kids. Any advice?

Re: Grand Canyon

We flew into Phoenix and drove to Sedona one year. We rented a big suburban. There's tons to do there. The. We drove to Grand Canyon for a day trip. We didn't want to camp.

How old are your kids? And how into hiking are you?

They are 8, 7, and 2 now...probably would be 10, 9, and 4 when we go...we are very outdoorsy and into history and sightseeing...its between Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, and Rocky Mountain National Park...

Grand Canyon can be combined with the petrified forest & Sedona.

I loved Yellowstone. It's a trip on its own! We always drove more than hiked.

We did Grand Canyon & Bryce once & combined with Vegas. Bryce was stunning & very doable. That would be the first place I'd go with kids.

Re: Grand Canyon

4 is a little young for Grand Canyon, imo. The hiking there is quite difficult unless you just stick to the rim trail. That said, it's amazing place and I love it there so I'd hate to steer someone away! The visitor center there is great, lots to see and do. There are also several hotels ranging in prices. I like the Maswik.

Some other options to consider since you want to combo it with California are Zion/Bryce in Utah which are a bit more kid friendly. They both have lots of shorter hikes and amazing scenery.

In Cali itself, you may want to consider Death Valley and Joshua Tree. Again, both have short hikes available and good scenery.

You really can't go wrong with any park out west. I've seen just about all of them and they all have amazing features and plenty to do.

Also, if you stick with Arizona you might want to look into the meteor crater near Flagstaff. It's not a national park, but it's cool.

We did a day trip to the Canyon. We took a train ride from Williams, AZ. It was a cool experience and my kids loved it. We didn't too much exploring though as my youngest fell asleep after we ate at Bright Angel (awful by the way). My husband took my oldest on a hike as I stayed with the double stroller. Now that the kids are older, I would love to go back.
