safest convertible car seat
A family member wants to purchase a convertible car seat for DS2 since he is quickly outgrowing his infant seat.
She told me she wants me to pick out the one with the best safety ratings. (I know they all need to meet certain standards, but she really wants to get him the one that's ranked safest of all)
Where would I find this info?? And do you know offhand which brands or models are very safe?? I want to keep him rear facing as long as possible, so a high weight limit for rear facing would be important to me.
Britax? Chicco? Graco? I'm clueless, any help would be appreciated!!

There are no "safest". There are easier to install, eadore to use, longer lasting, etc. Any safety tests done by the individual companies above the minimums set by the government are not released to the public. So there is no way of knowing if they exceeded by 1%, 20% or 100%
By quickly outgrowing, I'm assuming you mean by height? What is his age/weight/height?
For longest lasting rear facing I typically recommend the Graco seats - size4me, mysize, fit4me, headwise (they are all the same basic seat with different patterns, slightly different options and price points) They have a 40lbs rear facing maximum weight limit and the rear facing height limit is pretty much non existent (even a 100% child for height will outgrow rear facing by weight first)
The Chicco next fit is another good one, but it has higher sides which some don't care for. It has the same rear facing limits as the Graco seats.
The Britax ClickTight convertible seats (NOT the older G4 or G4.1 series) also have the same basic limits. I don't care for the ClickTight installation personally, and have seen a bunch of "user error" problems even though it's supposed to be user friendly.
Depending on the budget available for a seat, could be a factor too. There are a few other seats that have a 40 pound, 40" or 1" from she'll limit that are a little less then the Graco seats. That usually gets a child to 3.5-4 years old if they are average height & weight

I recommend the Britax Advocate, Pinnacle or a ReCaro. Theyre a little pricey but I feel safe with having my kids in them and they will last until about 65+lbs

I have to completely disagree with the Recaro. Unless there are different models, the Recaro Performance Ride is not a recommended seat when you consult CPST's (child passenger safety technicians). It has lower rear-facing limits than many seats (you should rear face a child until a minimum age of 2), is notorious for giving the child extremely limited legroom, and comes with a pretty big price tag given how quickly it can be outgrown. Check out the Graco Contender (around $139, but sometimes on sale -- I got mine on Amazon during a Black Friday sale for $99) or the Graco4Ever which is a multi-mode seat ($299). Can be used rear-facing, forward racing, high back booster, and backless booster.

Kohl's has the contender for $99 right now and I think there's a $10 code for baby gear you can use too. Plus ebates is double cash back right now!
