if you're not opposed to going a bit further east, maybe look into merrick, bellmore, wantagh, seaford... they are on the babylon LIRR line and offer express trains during rush hour into NYC.

we're def not opposed to going out a little further. it seems like that's what we're going to have to do anyway to get what we want. we did like the feel of bellmore and wantagh from what we saw. i'm going to look into merrick and seaford.

I'm not trying to be snarky but do you mind sharing what, in your opinion, the benefits are to these areas? Again, I'm not trying to stir anything up but we moved here and in all honestly we're quite unhappy with the area. I just really want to know if there is something here that DH and I are not seeing because believe me, after all the money we spent we WANT to like it!

I grew up in bellmore-merrick. Went to bellmore schools. Really liked it there and I wish We could have afforded to buy a house either there, wantagh or seaford but couldn't.

We lived in queens and were really against moving to LI bc everything in queens was so convenient.
After three months of living in one of the towns listed above we couldn't be happier. Merrick road has everything and more that we were afraid we'd miss in queens. Commute isn't too bad, and the space we have is amazing

Most towns bordering queens are great. Floral Park, New Hyde Park, Roslyn, Williston Park, East Williston.

Dh & I were born & raised in queens & these were our target areas when we were looking last year.

This! DH and I were both born and raised in Queens as well and we live around here

A lot will be determined by budget and your must-haves. We considered all the areas mentioned on this thread. As a general rule of thumb, the towns closer to queens are more expensive and lot sizes tend to be smaller. So it matters how much yard size matters to you and general budget. There were a few areas we couldn't touch as starting price was our max and those homes needed so much work. We didn't want to kill ourselves financially.

I'd recommend first getting a realistic budget and get pre-approved.
Make a real list of must haves and discuss where you can trade off. Example, we needed space for guests but we're ok with it being a basement bedroom
Do some research on schools. News day has some good info.
Compare schools and commutes - you will get a list similar to what's on this thread.
Drive around, go out to eat, shop, go to parks, playgrounds etc in these areas as much as possible.
start to see some houses which will get you a feel for what you can afford.

I think this board can really help once you narrow it down or have specific questions. Open ended tends to get dramatic

Fwiw, we are in north merrick and extremely happy! But we really wanted floral park for family proximity but just could not afford the space we need there and over 9 months nothing was listed in our range/space needs.

I'm curious what it is that you don't like? We moved to seaford almost 4 years ago and have been unbelievably happy. Great location, close to parkways, close to the lirr, close to beaches, and we've become great friends with our neighbors-there's a true sense of community that we love. Dh and I both grew up in east meadow and are much happier here than we ever were there

We live in Floral Park and while I am not a fan of LI in general, we really really love it here.

We're not in Seaford (but it sounds like maybe we should be!) The commute to the city is awful. There aren't enough trains, they don't run on time and the passengers are horribly rude. I've been pushed, shoved and forget about getting a seat at 8 mos pregnant. The subway is more civilized and thats saying something. There is traffic everywhere.

I have litter on my lawn all the time, no one picks up after their dogs. My neighbors aren't friendly. I have found zero sense of community. Maybe I just come from a tight knit neighborhood and expect too much, I don't know. These are just my observations, I'm happy that other people like the area. I wish I did, too and it's unfortunate because our house is beautiful. I hope things change and we can learn to love it but if not I don't see us staying here long term.

thank you!

this is what we've been doing. we have a budget, we're already preapproved and we hired a buyer's agent. we've definitely been doing our homework -- researching schools, driving around, stopping in stores. we also started looking at houses, deciding what we like and don't like. i was just looking for a little further guidance from others that live in the area.
