Thats bonkers. Surviving on $30K on Long Island.
I would think a receptionist position would be a starting point. Most move up to better paying jobs. Everyone can't be paid six figures and you need to start somewhere if you don't have an advanced degree.
I agree. I doubt a secretary is an end game, unless you have no education. But people need to start somewhere. Heck, I have a masters and I don't make that much more.
I have an education and I am a secretary. And this will probably be my 'end game' as you call it.
I think that was incredibly rude, I work hard and make good money.
I kinda agree- that stung. I'm an administrative receptionist and I make as much as my contractor DH, this year- more with overtime. I'm educated and driven and work my ass off doing plenty more than just answering phones. Ultimately, admin. assistant is my goal and in my office, they make about $75- $80k. Nothing to sneeze at IMHO. Plus, the added benefit of it being a job I can *mostly* leave at the office at the end of the day.
ETA: For the OP- My starting salary was $35k 10 years ago, but I work in Manhattan for a very large company. I know that makes a world of difference. The field/responsibilities also make a huge impact on the pay.
We were talking about Receptionist salaries not secretaries. Two totally different jobs.
Agreed, but that is why we are specifying

Haha it's the field- Corporate law. I went and interviewed for an admin position at an advertising agency and was offered about my starting salary as a receptionist.
