If your child receives OT for low muscle tone

Are you seeing an improvement in your child? How long have they been in therapy?
Do you know if a child with low muscle tone will always have to work much harder throughout their life at keeping themselves strong or is it "curable"
Is low muscle tone a genetic abnormality? No one in our families have this. Have you had your child tested for genetic disorders?

I am trying to learn more about this. I'd call my pediatricians but they are useless.

Dd1 had low muscle tone and was a late walker. We did early intervention and within two months of therapy she was running. She has more than made up for it and you'd never know she was delayed at all.

That's amazing! With my ds, he is just overall weak. I feel that his core is weak the most, then upper body, then lower body.
He will hopefully begin OT soon, he was just approved for 2 days a week.

Have you gone to a pediatric neurologist? Our pedi had us start there to make sure it wasn't more than that.

Are you in Suffolk? I loved our pt

Re: If your child receives OT for low muscle tone

My dd has low muscle tone but also has dev. coordination disorder. We started ot at age 3. Her muscle tone was never really questioned because she hit all her milestones early. We started noticing things like she wasn't able to jump, or sit up on slides, and could not feed herself correctly with a fork. At that time her motor skills and strength and tone were very low and on par with a child who was about 19 months old. She was getting ot twice a week and pt twice a week. PT is very important as well. I than went and had her diagnosed with dcd and got a 3rd ot added. She is now 5 and doing very well and no one would know she ever had any issues but it really took a long time and a lot of work from her ot/pt therapist, her teachers and us.

I am in Nassau. I plan on making an apt with a Neuro for sometime this month to make sure it's nothing more serious.

If your child receives OT for low muscle tone

Both my girls have received PT for low muscle tone through early intervention. My older one started at 14 months and within 6 months was well caught up. She is 3.5 now and I still see a difference between her and her peers but she makes do.

My younger one is almost a year. She started PT in august and within 2 months started rolling, pulling up, crawling, cruising, and even taking a few steps. She caught up crazy fast!

Both of them had hip dysplasia at birth so I think that didn't help although our ortho said he doesn't think it's related. My little one was also a preemie and had severe anemia at birth so that had her at an increased risk as well.

Re: If your child receives OT for low muscle tone

My DD is 5 and has low muscle tone. She was doing PT for a couple years but tested out. I have been told it's not something they will ever be rid of, they will always have to work harder, and core muscles are the most important to focus on. I do Pilates with my DD (when I'm not pregnant) and that keeps her core strong. I have noticed my DD has trouble writing (she doesn't hold a pencil properly and tires very easily) she also was behind in buttoning or undoing her seatbelt, and while she can tie her shoes, she can't seem to do it tight enough, so I'm trying to work on hand and arm muscles. I have never had her tested for other genetic disorders as I was never told anything like that.

Pretty much. When he was 16-17 months old, ds couldn't even stand without support. He was evaluated & found to have low tone. But by 18 months, he was walking well on his own & now at 2y3m he is all caught up. I don't really attribute his improvement to the PT (who wasn't really that great), but more just getting older & moving more. Not sure if he still would be considered to have low tone if he were evaluated today, but his gross motor skills are totally fine now.

Re: If your child receives OT for low muscle tone

I didn't get services through EI because he never seemed that far behind until he was 4. At that point I start noticing a bigger difference. He only received PT for a year, they discontinued it after preschool. I did notice improvement. But he's certainly not "cured" He is what I call floppy. But he gives it his best and I don't let it hold him back. He plays soccer, swims, skis, tajes hip hop, and we just signed him up for basketball. Is he awesome at any if them? Not really. But as long as he enjoys it that's good enough for me. And every sport he plays or activity he does will only improve his overall strength.

My 3 year old has low muscle tone. He saw a neuro once when he was a baby and we realized his tone was low. Neuro said just overall low tone (esp in core) and I haven't brought him back since. His low tone affects his speech- low oral tone. He qualified for EI and now CPSE and gets PT, OT and Speech. Aside from his low tone he is a normal kid and his cognitive level is high. I am getting him orthotics in his shoes to help with his balance. I def noticed an improvement within months of starting EI (he started OT only recently). Feel free to PM me.

I think his low tone makes him more tired than other kids which ends up making him crankier Chat Icon Chat Icon He's also much heavier to carry than my others because he's a mush and dead weight

ETA: I think low tone can run in families. He was never tested for anything genetic though and my other kids don't seem to have any tone issues.

Re: If your child receives OT for low muscle tone

My DC has had low tone since birth, only to be brushed off repeatedly for years at the doctors. I had an evaluation at 3, child did not qualify so I tried to keep my child active and building tone. All the while knowing something was wrong. My child would fall easily, trip easily, etc. Fast forward…my child just qualified for services in 1st grade OT and PT. Tone is better than when younger, but still not coordinated and lower tone/strength than peers. My child was diagnosed with DCD (coordination disorder) but I too was worried it could be something more. Neurologist didnt seem to think there was any reason to further investigate. Can't deny it still worries me a bit.
