Xpost: Breastfeeding support?

As a first time mom, what resources (preferably free or cheap as $ is tight) are available for breastfeeding moms? Have you used them and were you happy with it?

I seriously have no clue what I'm doing.

LI Breastfeeding is a great resource.

Also, hospitals will offer breastfeeding support / classes. Most are low-cost or free.

Check around for a La Leche League chapter near you. Also free and great info. I wish I went while I was pregnant.

A book called "The Womanly Art of BFing" was my bible. It's a little militant, but the info was fantastic.

Find a ped that's genuinely supportive - and knowledgeable - about breastfeeding.

GOOD LUCK!! It's not easy to get started, especially as a first-time mom, but IMO worth it.

There is a wonderful group led by a LC at St. Catherine's in Smithtown. I believe it is held once a week, back in the day (DD is 7 now) it was Mondays. I met all my first Mommy friends there and got all of my questions answered!

I thought the book breastfeeding made simple was really helpful.

A lactation consultant is invaluable if you're struggling. Get some recommendations before you deliver.

What area are you in? LLL is great. The group in Southeast suffolk is great and has a wonderful Facebook group where you can get advice 24/7.

Many pediatricians are also lactation consultants and will work with you

I know Good Sam and Stony Brook both have free breastfeeding support groups. You can call the hospital you delivered at to see if they offer as well

Also, depending on your insurance, a lactation consultant may only be covered at the hospital. I learned this the hard way! Some insurances cover X amount of sessions at home, some only during your hospital stay, and I suppose some not at all or other.
