FTM - starting solids question! Quinoa
Hi ladies - this is my first post since having my DD exactly 5 months ago!
At her 5 month appointment today the pediatrician mentioned I should be starting rice cereal. I've expressed my concern over rice at past appointments, and I was told I could start with oatmeal, but I am worried about a reaction she had to Aveeno baby lotion (oats) so I'm reluctant. I was wondering if anyone used or made quinoa baby cereal and if that could be a good sub for the rice / oatmeal first food.
Any thoughts or advice? I'm not fully comfortable going against "doctor's orders" but I also haven't read a lot of good things about cereals and I feel like it is a suggestion based on tradition rather than what is really best for baby. Any thoughts? TIA!!

FTM - starting solids question! Quinoa
I skipped cereals completely and started with orange veggies- I waited until six months to introduce solids since it is what the American academy of pediatrics and my dd's pediatrician and allergist recommend. After I did orange veggies and some green veggies I introduced oatmeal-I used regular organic rolled oats and put them in my mini chopper for a few seconds- the baby cereals have a lot of added stuff and I try to avoid that in my diet and do the same for dd.

I skipped cereal too and also waited till 6 months. We saw a different doctor at 5 months, and he did yell at my husband for not feeding him solids yet. I just told him to yes him, but we'll do what we want. I did eventually add in oatmeal and barley. I read a correlation from no barley to gluten intolerance, probably complete bs, but I thought I'd check it out. We started with sweet potatoes, avocados, bananas, everything that is already mushy, then begin steaming and pureeing everything. By 11 months, he was eating pretty much everything including whole eggs, peanut butter, and whole milk with the doctors blessings.

I skipped rice cereal and went straight to oatmeal and then orange veggies. I dont see why you cant just eliminate it... right now all food is for "learning" to eat, not nutrition.

Re: FTM - starting solids question! Quinoa
As the others have said, there's no need to do cereals if you're not comfortable. Go right to fruits and veggies!
I liked the cereals with DS because I could mix it with purees as he got older to give him a "heartier" breakfast but change up the flavors. So far, my DD does not like the cereals at all, but she's been ok with apples, so I'll skip the cereal for now.

Re: FTM - starting solids question! Quinoa
My dr said that babies tolerate rice best (but only wanted a few days of that because it is constipating). She did oatmeal next & the logic was to have kids learn to eat with something that is yummy (it tastes like th formula or breast milk you mix it in). We started at 4 months. There are both risks & benefits of early vs late!
Why don't you call your ped & propose your idea. I really have no idea cc quinoa... But I think the Aveeno probably had so much stuff in it that I wouldn't worry about oatmeal!

Re: FTM - starting solids question! Quinoa
I never did rice only because I was concerned it would constipate him. I totally went against what my ped at the time said he told me to do the rice and I went straight to oatmeal. My girlfriend who has three kids under the age of four said that is what she did on her ped's rec so I followed suit. Worked great for us.

Just skip cereal if you are uncomfortable. What makes you think it was the oats in the lotion? I'd be pretty surprised if the lotion actaully had real oat or oat products in it. Product labeling gets away with almost anything.....

We opted to skip cereal altogether. My pediatrician recommended oatmeal and specifically not rice because it tends to be constipating and US rice products have been found to have small traces (very minor) of arsenic. Despite the rec, I did a bunch of my own research and decided that cereal wasn't necessary. IMO, it's empty calories and hard to digest. Fruits and veggie are easier on the digestive system and are significantly more nutritious. I did orange veggie (carrots, sweet potatoes, squash) then green veggies (string beans and peas) and finally fruits (apples, bananas, pears, peaches). DD is 5 months and in addition to her bottles, she has a fruit in the AM and a veggie in the PM around dinner time.

I didn't listen to my ped at all when it came to starting solids. We skipped all cereals and started with chunks of avocado, followed by banana at 6 mo. We went the baby-led weaning way and it worked amazingly well for us. It just seemed more natural to me. All the "rules" doled out from my ped stressed me out

That's what we did too. When my ped mentioned purees and cereal, I just smiled and nodded and did my own thing which was baby led weaning. Definitely doing it again with #2.

Thank you for all the replies! I'm definitely interested in BLW. I wish I could wait until 6 months for solids but I'll be going back to work right after DD turns 6 months and I want to get her started before she is being watched by my mother.
For those of you that just did blw without informing your doctor, what did they say once they found out? Does anyone go to Nassau Pediatrics in Franklin Square, by any chance?

Barley was another possibility I was considering. Did you make your own or what brand did you use? How did your dc like it?

I never even told them. They never asked anyway. Just said make sure she's eating fruits, veggies, when to start meat.
You can still start at 6 months. DD started daycare at 6 months right before we started solids. We just gave her food at night during dinner. And we didn't even do every night. Food before one, just for fun. Eventually we started giving her more meals a day and once she was eating more and better, we let daycare give her food.

I made all my own purees, but not cereals. I used Earth's Best, and no he didn't like any cereals. It was more a one or two times try. I will see we did our iron test early at 10 months just to lessen the pain of his 1 year visit. At that point he hadn't had eggs or meat, and he failed the test. I was so upset. I was also so low and most of his diet was still bm at this point. I immediately put him on eggs and he was fine by 1 year. Also we started milk earlier than 1 year because I went back to work at 3 months and he was fine taking pumped bottles. Then I was home from 8 months to 10 months (I am teacher) and he refused all bottles when we returned. I tried sippys of rice milk first, but was worried about arsenic, so we went to whole milk with no issues. The peanut thing I did on my own because I'm a believer in earlier exposure, not delayed. The drs said it was ok as long as no one in our family has a known allergy.
