My DD's birthdays for ages 1,2 and 3 were family parties. I didn't think it made sense to have a huge, expensive party when she wouldn't really remember/get much out of it.

We made a 4th birthday party for her at a "place"...and it was a disaster. Too many kids and people and it was overwhelming for her. She cried for most of the party.

Her 5th was perfect. It was great timing for her. I have a 3 month old now, and I am waiting for her 5th to throw her a party. I'm not spending hundreds of dollars if she won't enjoy it.

When you say "family parties" who does that include exactly? And were the parties in the house?

LOL It looks like Im the only one that doesn't want to do a big 1st Birthday! I hope DH isn't a lurker because he says it should be a big party Chat Icon Chat Icon

We NEVER once did a big party for DD.
First birthday through 4th was just immediate family- meaning my parents, DH's parents, and our sibligns.
that's it.
In the yard. Catered food and cake. No theme. no BS

5th birthday we just took her out for a day of fun and had my parents and sister over for pizza and cake that night. Even smaller.

I am not into birthday parties and the money is better spent in her college fund

This is what I want to do. Have my parents, DHs parents, my brother, SIL and their kids and DHs brother and his wife. Have a BBQ party in my parents yard. Get the girls cute outfits and a fun cake for pictures and thats it!
But DH says the rest of his family will be insulted.
Is it bad that I don't care? LOL

LOL- not bad at all!
If they will be SO insulted, let them plan the party and pay for it.
Crazy!

They were always at my house. It was immediate family - both sets of parents, our siblings and their families (we have 3 siblings between us). He and I each had our best friend over too. Maybe 15-20 people all together.

All kids really want is a cake & singing!
And it really is about the kid!
Trust me, I don't want to go to any 3 year old birthday!

We did big first birthdays with over 100 people. Every year after that we have just had our parents and siblings over for dinner and cake and then a seperate kids party. No extended relatives are ever invited. There's just too many people so we keep it small.
