CIO method
At first I tried the method where you let them cry for a prescribed amount of time and then go in and soothe them. That did not work at all for my DS - if anything it made it worse. Around 6 months, I was pretty sick and could not get out of bed. He cried for 15 minutes and passed out.

Re: CIO method
What are you doing CIO for?
There's really 2 methods - Ferber where you check in a regular, but increasing intervals. And extinction where you just lay baby down, kiss goodnight and let the baby cry. The latter tends to work "faster" though it's harder at first. Often times, though, the checks make the baby more upset, so people who try Ferber move to extinction.

CIO method
I tried Ferber and it was the hardest 2 days of my life. It made my baby worse when I went in, and I was so sick about the process I was literally throwing up. I almost gave up on the entire process but then tried extinction, telling myself that if he cried more than 15 mins I would end it all. He cried like 12 mins the first night, and less than 10 mins the second. After that he was able to put himself down. They always say "it is harder on you than them" -- in this case, for me, it was 100% true.

CIO method
I did it when DD was older than 6 months, and only if she woke during the night. She had started to wake several times a night looking for me. I would check on her to make sure she was ok, dry, not hungry, etc, then kiss her and leave the room. with her I found I couldn't keep going back in the room, or it would just make her cry more. So I would leave her be and watched her on the monitor to make sure she was ok. The first night took a while, definitely over 30 min, but the next few nights she cried less and less, until she started sttn. Every few months, If she was teething or sick, she would regress because then I would go and comfort her during the night. So when she was feeling better I would do CIO again to get back on track. Its the worst feeling to hear your baby crying for you and to stop yourself from going to her, but in the end it was for the best so we could both get a decent nights sleep.

Re: CIO method
So what happens during the night if they wake up? I'm nervous to wake my older DD. The pacifier is the biggest problem. Every time it falls out she cries and it's like an all night thing. I'm going to start it soon but do I just let her cry and not worry about the pacifier?

Yep, just let her figure out how to adapt. When I was initially doing cio with my older ds (when he was around 10 months old), if he cried, I would just go in once to check & make sure there was no real issue, like he didn't poop & that his arm or leg wasn't stuck between the crib bars. Then once I was confident there wasn't any issue, I'd lay him down, tell him to go to sleep, & I'd leave & not return. Depending on the child's age, I'd explain what's going on. Even now, my ds is 2 & sometimes cries when I put him in his crib for his nap... there's nothing wrong, he just wants to stay up & play... I lay him down, help him get comfortable, tell him I'm leaving & I won't be coming back in until after he has a good long rest... if he cries for me again, I just don't go in. He knows the drill now & goes right to sleep.

How old is your baby?
My DD was waking 10-15 times a night for the paci so I did CIO a couple weeks ago to get rid of it at night (she still has it for daytime naps). Within a few days, she was sleeping fine without it. She's still young, so I feed her once or twice a night when she wakes up. Though, right after we did CIO she sttn a couple of times. I wish it lasted.

Re: CIO method
She's almost 6 months. I did the CIO with my first DD but more modified. Since DD1 is 4 and in school, I want to get DD2 sleeping bc I don't want her to wake up her sister. Trying tonight. Keeping my fingers crossed it's not terrible.

CIO method
We started CIO at 3 months. I put DD down sleepy but awake and for the first week or so she would "fuss" and kind of cry for 5-7 minutes and then fall asleep for 10-12 hours. Now she is almost 5 months and goes down every night without a problem. I know it's hard to hear the baby cry and not go to them (I had to leave the house when we first did it!) but I really feel like it helps them learn how to fall asleep on their own, which is an important life skill.
Edited to Add: We always set a timer for 10 minutes...but she never even got close to the full 10 before falling asleep :)
