It's a bit ridiculous that because NYS isn't compliant with security we are stuck paying extra for their BS "enhanced" license.
At least I got global entry which of course requires a passport to get. This will allow me to at least carry my global entry card plus my regular NYS license to get on a flight.
Oh and I see zero chance of this taking effect in 2016. They will delay the program for sure. there are thousands of people who travel that don't have passports. This will take time to take effect and if the first time I hear about it is on LIF then the majority of people aren't even aware.

I think EDL is an extra $30. This will turn into a major mess for the airlines. People showing up at airports not having the proper documentation.
When NYS started the EDL they should have required it back then so they could have gotten people upgraded in stages. Now there will be a rush for passports and/or EDLs. That should be fun to watch how that plays out.

i heard about this too- didn't NY just issue new licenses? i got a new one in Dec when i changed my name its got a the hologram and stuff is that the enhanced license? this is crazy- looks like i won't be flying for a while i need a new passport with my new name and our new address when we move hopefully within the next few weeks. ugh

Well they are going to make you basically get the enhanced driver's license. Otherwise you can use your passport. It is a pain and more expense but you can upgrade you DL and just use the enhanced one.

Why can't NY just change their licenses? Obviously it would take time. NY licenses have always been weird. My MD license has been a hard credit card type since I was 21, where NY's is so papery.

They are changing. I just received a new one. It's a different material/feel to it and completely different look.

I renewed my license I want to say 2 years ago, and it's not papery. It's hard plastic, and has a creepy black and white hologram type picture on clear plastic on it, along with the regular picture.

Really? I needed to bring my son's birth certificate and Social Security card to get a picture ID, not even a license at the DMV. They refused though because I didn't have his actual Social Security card with me. Don't you have to be a US Citizen to get a SSN?

You just book your flight in the name on your passport. You don't need them to match. Wait until your passport expired to fix it.

Absolutely positively NOT
My husband isn't a citizen (he's technically British with a Green Card) he has a SS but isn't American, but he's been in America since he was 3.

All I can ell you is the story very clearly states you don't have to be a citizen to get a DL. Its VERY easy to get one. Because of this a NY drivers license will not be valid as ID to use on a flight.

Well a birth certificate is proof of citizenship, so I don't get that whole part. It was actually very hard to try to just get a picture ID for my son through the State, so I had to get a passport, which was much easier! Screwy!
