How much gas money to give babysitter driving kids around?
I work p/t, two days a week, and the babysitter will be driving DD to and from preschool on both days.
Preschool is 6 minutes away.
The sitter has suggested taking DS to a park or library after she drops off DD, both are a mile away from the school.
How much gas money should I be giving her? I was thinking a set amount each month.

I would think its included. Maybe I'm wrong.

i dont think i would give an additional money for such a short amount of driving.
If she asks for money maybe give $10 per month

Interesting you say that... part of me was thinking maybe the answer is nothing. I have friends that pay their babysitter less when one kid goes to school, I'm not doing that, but maybe it's kind of like calling it even with the gas $?

Our babysitter will be driving DD to school - 5 minutes away - once a week and I never even thought about gas money. I think its included in the amount we are paying her.
Our last babysitter drove both kids 3 days a week and even picked them up from our house (she watched them at her house and drove DD to school) and we didn't give her anything extra and in the 4 years she watched our kids she never asked for gas money.

Really? That's like 2 gallons of gas.. most cars can get like 30-40 miles on 2 gallons... she'd be going about 6 miles. Seems a bit steep... generous, of course, but steep!

I figure it's also wear and tear on the car. That's what we give our nanny whenever she drives them anywhere.

I'm not sure what the "correct" answer is in regards to how much money she should be reimbursed for gas, but I don't think its an unfair request on her behalf. IMO, when you pay a babysitter, the hourly rate you are paying is for them to care for and look after your child -- that's it. That money doesn't include things like gas, entrance fees to events, etc.

I pay my sitters $5 extra a day for driving. They drive to school to pick up DDs and drive back to our house. One sitter also lives several miles away from us. I figured they were using their cars and gas so we would give extra for that. I wonder what the norm is now?

FWIW, she didn't request it, we're trying to figure out what (and I guess now, if) we should offer it.

FWIW, she didn't request it, we're trying to figure out what (and I guess now, if) we should offer it.
IMO, I'd offer it. The way I look at it is that I'd rather give a small amount of money weekly for her to get around if it means she is doing fun, active, educational things (museums, libraries, parks, etc.) with my child rather than sitting at home in the house possibly with them in front of a TV or iPad or video game.

Seriously what's $5 extra a day (given its occasional) for a happy nanny? It goes a long way. Trust me... I'm a nanny myself and I go the extra mile when I feel I'm thought about and appreciated

Thanks everyone, I decided on $10/month. Because of school holidays and work days off, it comes to her having to drive DD to school 5-6x a month.
