Travel competition between friends?

I don't know how to describe it exactly but does anyone experience jealousy or competition or a copy-cat trend when it comes to travel between your group of family and/or friends? How do you deal with it? It goes both ways with me, I do get jealous of others peoples plans, things I can't afford but would love to do but I also really hate when people seem to be competing with our travel plans and copy us and then try to one up us somehow. I don't think I'm explaining any of this correctly. Any advice on how to deal with others travel plans? I try to keep mine as private as possible, but its hard since it usually has to come up at some point as to why we will be away and such.

Re: Travel competition between friends?

It's simple- I worry about myself and my family.
I couldn't care less where others go and what they do.
Yes, if I see someone in a beautiful, tropical location in February when I'm buried in snow I feel a pang of jealousy- who wouldn't.?

But I plan trips that work for us and that we can afford and that we enjoy and I look forward to them and that's it.

If anyone copies me or tries to compete, so what? Imitation is the biggest form of flattery and I don't own any location or trip.

I don't get caught up in jealousy or competition with anything in life- homes, cars, clothes, handbags etc.
I do and wear and drive what I like and what works for me. Period

Life is too short

Absolutely agree.

I don't have this type of competitive nature, so if someone was trying to compete with my vacation plans I wouldn't even be aware of it. I have never even thought of trying to copy or one-up someone's trip, nor have I thought anyone would do this to me.

My guess would be you're imagining it? I wouldn't waste time or energy worrying about what other people are doing. As said above, life is way too short. Go on the trips that interest you and spend what's in your budget. If someone wants to make their next vacation similar to your last, be flattered and offer them tips.

Re: Travel competition between friends?

We know a couple like this but it's with everything.

And then they've been known to poo-poo people for doing stuff they don't do (be it with the house, a new car, trip, whatever).

It's a joke now with DH and I now about what they will say about stuff we do.

Honestly, it doesn't bother me because I'm not a jealous person, someone who compares myself to others or thinks I can change people to be more like me or how I want them.

If they are annoying people who constantly have to one up you in every category, I would probably just distance myself from them because they don't sound like much fun.

If it was just a case of people supposedly copying me, not only would I not mind, I don't even think that I would notice.

Re: Travel competition between friends?

I don't think it is copying when one person raves about a resort and others want to check it out. There are only so many kid friendly resorts and vacations. I know I am always looking for recommendations.

I love to travel. I try not to talk about vacations so much in the real world though. That is why I research online. I have gotten probably 50% or more of our travel recommendations from LIF - Beaches, Atlantis, Rosewood, Disney, Hershey, DW, etc. were all recommendations from LIF.

I wouldn't care if someone went to the same place, even if they went at the same time, lol.. I don't have any reason to keep plans secret.
People hear about a place and think it sounds nice. No big deal.

Re: Travel competition between friends?

I cuoldn't care less about any of it - but I'm not a competitive person at all -

As long as I'm going on vacation and enjoying myself, and my family, whatever anyone else does is their business ..........
I don't play the 'one up' game, and I don't engage with anyone trying to play it with me -

Nope.

I don't get jealous and I don't worry about what other people do.

I don't own any location - who cares if someone else wants to go somewhere I am going? It doesn't impact my trip whatsoever.

NOPE! we encourage each other to travel! We are eager to give people our itineraries. traveling has become addicting for us but its not a race! If you have friends who want to "race you" as far as how many countries they have visited, just laugh it off. What YOU and your family take away from each trip is what's important.

Perfect advice!

I don't feel this competition in my life at all. I have friends who take way more glamorous or luxurious trips then we do. And I'm thrilled for them and can't wait to hear all about it. I actually love to hear about it. I feel no need to go the same places or trump them. I personally like to take lots of trips. We usually only get on a plane once or twice a year, but I'm away on average once a month- even for just a night or two. That's my travel style and how I like it. Everyone is different. No need for competition. Traveling is not a game.

Re: Travel competition between friends?

Well this can continue with the post about my sister as she does small trips a few times a year. I find nothing wrong with that. We are more bigger vacation people and that is just what we like.

She makes it a competition and have said, well you don't go here or there like we do. So? We would rather take our children out of the country for one vacation then the same few places they go to every year.

I am not sure why it people have to compete about things like that. You do what you enjoy.

It all sounds immature IMO. Especially regarding copying. No one owns vacation plans. And the best solution is to stop sharing where you are vacationing if you don't want people to "copy."

Or just keep mum. You don't own anyone any info ya know
