Those who have been to Puerto Rico

Is it a "safe" island? As in, did you feel safe there, especially with your kids?

I have never been and am looking into going next year. But I know literally nothing about it.

I know there are certain islands where I did not feel safe. Jamaica was one of them. Other than the resort, (which had armed guards and barbed wire) I felt a little uneasy.

How is PR in terms of safety?
I obviously know that ANYWHERE you go- in the US and out- you need to be vigiliant, and that obvioulsy crime happens everywhere, even in the "safest" places

I was just curious overall how PR stacked up in terms of feeling secure with your family as compared to other places

Thanks!

PR has some unsafe areas like everywhere else, but overall I felt safe when there. Like you stated, the usual precautions apply no matter where you are.

I felt very safe there, but I was not in the San Juan area. We were in the SW corner of the island so we did a lot of venturing out on our own, went to local places to eat, etc.
People were friendly, too, even though we speak like no Spanish and they spoke like no English. Chat Icon

Oh and I felt MUCH safer there than I did in the DR. I would never leave a resort in the DR if I ever went again.

Hmmm- most of the resorts- like the Ritz, etc seem to be San Juan.
Is San Juan a "bad" area?
It seems very touristy

I have no clue...I would think it is as safe as any touristy area. Just wanted you to know my experience was NOT in San Juan since I figured that was where you were looking. If you are interested in a less touristy trip, check out the resort we stayed at. We went in November and I am not exaggerating when I say some days we had the place to ourselves. And there is an awesome public deep water beach you can walk to next door. The beach there was kind of shallow but would be good for a LO.

If you want more info on the area, let me know. Some cool stuff there are dry rainforest parks and a bay that illuminates at night.
Definitely off the beaten path, we flew into Aguidilla (sp?) and rented a car for the week.

We went there before kids and felt safe overall. In old san juan there was an area by the water called la perla that's supposed to be the ghetto but it was separate from the rest of the san juan. There were cops standing over that area. I did feel the drivers were a bit crazy though like there's hardly any traffic rules.

Re: Those who have been to Puerto Rico

Jamaica is a known destination that you do all inclusive a and do not leave your resort for safety reasons. Puerto Rico is not like that at all. Of course genre are bad areas, but you won't be in them.

They have a lot of nice hotels, some really expensive. Old San juan is beautfiul to walk around and has eat restaurants it's adtually touristy and the cruise ships come in there so on those days it could be annoying.

We felt safe in San Juan. We stayed at the Ritz. Not too much to do in walking distance. We took cabs into old San Juan and some other nearby restaurants no issues at all.

Those who have been to Puerto Rico

I felt completely safe outside the resort in San Juan. We walked from our hotel to another hotel, took taxis, and walked around Old San Juan, etc. In my opinion, very different than the islands where you are really restricted to the resort.
