Celiac Disease

My 5 year old DS is in the process of being diagnosed with Celiac
Routine bloodwork at his 5 year old check up came back very low hemoglobin etc
Further tests revealed major iron deficiency...and further tests after that came back all very positive for celiac.
He is supposed to have an endoscopy this week to confirm.
Any insight from any moms here?
DS had no other symptoms besides the anemia. Blood work was normal 1 year ago
Thanks for any help!

Re: Celiac Disease

I don't have any first hand experience with this but my SIL has celiac disease and our family has learned how to cook and prepare foods without cross contamination. I just wanted to let you know that there are tons of companies that now offer options to people that are GF and I know it is easier to shop now then it was years ago. Good Luck!

Re: Celiac Disease

My son was tested positive for Celiac back in April (he just turned 3). His blood apparently tested off the charts for it but we opted not to do the endoscopy for the "confirmation" because we felt it was too invasive. Plus there is a family history of it (FIL and DH's grandmother both have it) so it wasn't really surprising. We have cut out gluten from his diet. At first it was hard but now it comes pretty easy. I buy gluten free waffles and bread for breakfast and lunch dishes. For dinner we give him a protein like hamburger, hot dog, chicken. There are a lot of GF products out there. The only pain so far I have found is going to birthday parties.

ETA the symptom my DS had that prompted us to see the GI in the first place was frequent loose BM's. I forgot to add, that taking a daily probiotic helped a lot (I put culturelle into his juice each morning).

I would recommend joining some fb groups. There is a celiac support group that is super active and another called gluten free on long island. Like pp said, there is so much out there and you will get into a groove quickly. I would also shop at stores like target and shoprite that put a gf label right on the shelf to make life easier.

Re: Celiac Disease

My ds1 was dx'd in December. He had symptoms since birth. My dd was dx'd a month later. Looking back she had some symptoms but nothing like ds. I was also d'x at the same time. My symptoms were more joint pain and migraines. All three of us had the upper endoscopy with biopsy done. It was a little scary but over before we knew it. We are now gluten free and feeling better. Feel free to pm my if you have any questions.
