I do not feel this is safe... child in car
My ILs watch my DS who is 3 and will likely watch DS2 when I go back to work too. My MIL is going to be 68 and has more energy than me. She gives DS1 piggy back rides and let's him ride her like a horse! for those saying 70 is too old to watch kids it really depends on the 70 year old. Generally, I am pretty lenient with letting them do whatever they want with DS because they are doing us a HUGE favor. If at any time I felt like my kids LIFE was in danger though, I would absolutely tell them either they do the right thing or I'll find alternative care. There's being lenient and then there's being reckless.
If she doesn't see the danger because she "grew up in a different time", she probably never will. But then showing her the countless news stories where people got arrested, children got taken away from homes, etc etc should be enough of a motivator not to do this again.

If it was right in front of the school, I would suggest to her that next time she recruit another mom walking by to either watch the car or get your son. I understand her desire not to wake the child, but she shouldn't have left her alone.
