Germany and trains
Our friends are moving to germany and will be there for the next 3 years- we want to visit next summer and they said we can look into train passes to france, switzerland, austria, italy etc. (any of the surrounding countries).
We would love to go to france while we are there, but it looks like the train rides are still like 8 hours or so and are pretty pricey.
Have any of you done something similar to this? If so, what other countries did you visit near germany?

Re: Germany and trains
Have you looked at current prices of flights? I'm headed to Europe next week to meet DH there and he's been flying between different cities for under $100 a ticket. Definitely worth saving the time and just flying.

Germany and trains
A few weeks ago we did Munich and Paris by train. It was about 5-6 hours but easy and pleasant. One train change along the way in Stuttgart. i adore Paris and I'd do that!

Re: Germany and trains
I loved riding the trains in Germany. It was the way we got from one grandmother's house to the other's, about a 6 hour train ride. We weren't close to an airport at either Grandmother's. You get to see so much of the countryside and how it changes from region to region.
Depending upon how many people you are, you might qualify as a "mini-group" where the fares are discounted.

This.
What part of Germany will they be in? You can get the group rates, but not on the fast trains. If you do something within the state then you can get a ticket for that state for up to 5 people.
If you are organized, special train fare prices for the high-speed trains go up at exactly 90 days before your travel date. Check http://www.bahn.de/p_en/view/index.shtml for details.
Since you are going to other countries, I would suggest a train pass. Figure out how many travel days you will have and get a Eurail pass. However, I think that train travel has gotten quite expensive and the trains are not on time like they used to be. I've had some really bad delays of 1-2 hours. I don't know if it's my luck or not .
Since we got a car, we find travel is a lot cheaper for both of us. DH and I use the car for trips of less than 4 hours by train or if we are going to a major city where parking will be a pain. I think this is a good idea if you want to explore more places that you can't easily get to by train, Southern Bavaria for example.
For flying, it will be cheaper if you fly in through Frankfurt, IMO. Singapore Airlines was always my best bet when I lived there. If you want to go to another city, I would fly through Frankfurt or another major hub (London, Amsterdam, etc.).
Let me know if you have any questions! I live in Munich, so I'd be glad to help!
