Poop/constipation question may be TMI
My son 13 months has been struggling to poop and when he does it's very big and very hard. Sometimes I have to help him get it out. The pediatrician recommended fiber one cereal but didn't think Metamucil or benefiber would be a good idea as it won't fix the problem and may be "explosive". I hate to see him struggle like this. He woke up in the middle of the night screaming and again during his nap. Any advice?

Have you cut back on dairy? It can mess with your LO's digestive system.
I'd try benefiber. My sister did with my niece and it was successful. She was around the same age.

DS was having trouble going when I started him on the multi-vitamin (because of the iron). I started making oatbran with fruit & veggie puree for breakfast and it's really helped. It has a good amount of fiber and DS really likes it. This is the brand I buy from fairway: OatBran

When DD is having trouble going I give her peaches, pears, or plums. With an hour or 2 it softens it up so it makes it easier for her to go. I make sure She eats pears, plums, or peaches at least 3 times a week and it hasn't been a problem in a while.

100% pear juice is what helped my son with his chronic constipation issues. I gave him one ounce 2-3 times a day... It worked better then anything we tried.

Our pediatrician just gave us the ok to use Miralax with 4y/o DS. The night before his appt he was so constipated and crying I went out at 1:30am to buy him glycerin suppositories. Worked within minutes and we were all able to sleep well.

Pears or pear juice. I also swear by probiotics. Also, if you are feeding bananas, rice, or apples they are all binding. I wouldnt give those items until you have a good flow going ;)

This. I put it in his water and make him drink it. Not ideal, but sometimes he is in so much pain there is just nothing else I can do.
He had a lot of issues when we switched him to whole milk. His stomach just couldnt handle it so the doctor said to switch him to 2% and it made a huge difference.
