how do i say this?

i have a new office manager.

our jobs/duties aren't exactly written down. together, we're to make sh!t happen in the office. the thing is that no matter how big or how small the task is, he's constantly pushing ALL the work on me.

for example, i heard the owner telling him to make sure our address is forwarded with the post office. two minutes later, he send me an email to do it.

sometimes, the delegating makes sense and i have no problem with it... sometimes he's just being a lazy a$$.

how do i politely/professionally tell him to back the fluck off; there is only so much time in the day and i seriously can not do all the work by myself. if he helped once in a while, we wouldn't constantly be behind the 8 ball.

i've already tried, "sorry, B. i can't get to that task today because there's already so much on my plate and i won't be able to get it done." to which he replied, "that's ok. do it tomorrow."

help me find the right words to help me draw a line in the sand.

I don't think I'd say anything at all. I mean, if B was getting on your a$$ about why all the stuff wasn't done, then that's different. But, since there's no pressure (since B said 'that's ok, do it tomorrow)', then I'd just do what B asks me to do.
I know it's annoying, but that's what I would do.

Re: how do i say this?

If the owner tells him then I wouldn't worry

If he is not "allowed" to delegate jobs to you then when it doesn't get done he will have to answer to them

Is he your supervisor? If so, then you just have to grin and bear it. If not, sit down with him and discuss how to divide tasks so that you are performing equal amount of work.

If you are uncomfortable discussing it with him you could just keep saying, "I don't have time so it would be best if you do it. Thank you!." Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: how do i say this?

If he's my manager then yeah I would do whatever he said/asked and wouldn't say anything.

If we are on the same level then that's a different story and we would have to have a discussion about how to quantify his tasks, and my tasks, and which we share and who does what and how we can best and most effectively work together to get everything we need to get done, done.

Re: how do i say this?

IMO you don't, assuming they are your superior.

Re: how do i say this?

If this was a peer, I'd have issues with this.

I've run into this from time to time at work with people wanting me to do stuff for them and I usually have my manager get involved to clarify my duties.

Tends to save any drama since its coming from them and not me.

Is he your superior? If he is, unfortunately I think you have to take whatever task it is that he gives you unless it's totally outside of the scope of your job description. Chat Icon

If I am understanding correctly, the office manager is your boss and the owner is the manager's boss? Is that correct? If so, I would try to resolve the matter with the manager before going over his head to the owner.

I would agree, except that if this is a new manager & all of a sudden the job roles responsibilities have shifted form being split, to being pushed on MK, then I think it is an issue for the owner.

I would mention to the owner that things seem to have changed a lot since B replaced X & you were just wondering if the job description changed & responsibilities changed.

Are you also getting work directly from the owner?

tourist has it mostly right.
the previous office manager wasn't my supervisor, per se. we worked together to make the office function.

if B is now my supervisor, no one told me. i just will have to talk to the owner for clarification. i won't go in there accusing anyone of anything.

side note: i just found out that the owner found out that B is lazy and putting all the work on me and is PIZZED.
i don't know how this will play out
