need my toddler out of my bed

DS is 4 years 4 months old.

So here is my issue. He won't get out of my bed. Hubs and I are being woken up some many times a night and i really need some real solid sleep these days.

Any ideas or things that worked for your kiddos? I loved co-sleeping for a while, but now I want my bed back.

We got him new room decor, he didn't care.

I need to get my sleep back!!!

What about a reward chart? Start with bigger reward for staying in bed each night and wean down to something smaller if it starts to work.

Bribery. Tell him you will buy him something he really wants if he stays in his bed for x nights and continues to stay in there.

My 5 1/2 year old comes in with us sometimes at night and it's pure torture. Good luck!

I too have tried everything and nothing works - new sheets, new lights, rewards. No clue what I am going to do when DD3 arrives!

Re: need my toddler out of my bed

I got my son (4.5 at the time), a double bed.

I would lay in there with him, until he fell asleep. The key was staying awake myself!

Now, he mostly stays in there all night, occasionally he will come in our bed if he has a nightmare, but that is rare.

He just wanted a bigger bed of his own!

Re: need my toddler out of my bed

We had set a goal with ds#2 - once he turned 5 he couldn't go to bed with us anymore. Since then he goes to bed in his own bed and stays there most nights. He does occasionally come back in, but he sneaks in and doesn't say a word.

Dd spent the last two months co sleeping. She's 10 months. To transition her back, we put iPad in crib with Elmo movie playing. We are on night four, and the last two nights of that worked. It distracted her from not feeling us next to her. Obviously we don't want the iPad to be a habit, but we figured it was worth a shot when CIO wasn't getting us anywhere.

We tried a tv in his room, no luck

My DS has a double, he wants to sleep as close to me as possible... so either I go in there or he comes in with me.

I did this for a bit, which was bad because DH and I had no time together and didn't sleep in same bad and DS's bed is not as comfy as mine, lol

DD loves falling asleep with me (we used to co-sleep) and for the most part once she's asleep she now sleeps through the night so i can go to my bed. ocassionally she calls for me around 4am and i go in for a little bit. She has a double bed and its comfy because i bought it knowing she likes me to sleep with her. She's 4.

Does your DS wake up when you leave? Is he sleeping through the night? I would just sleep in his room and then work on leaving once he's asleep and getting him used to you not being there...can he sleep with your pillow or a tshirt of yours? I know sleeping with something of mine helped DD be on her own in her room.

We go through this every so often.
Just say no & walk him back to bed.
We make the rare exception for a bad nightmare.

Going through the same problem. I know that i should be more consistent about sending her back to bed. Part of me thinks that if she's scared she needs me...we tried the sleep clock and the lights on but neither worked for long.

Re: need my toddler out of my bed

We started by telling DD that it was okay to be in our room, but not our bed. So, she dragged in her Elmo flip sofa bed and slept on the floor. She loved it initially, but we slowly helped her realize that a bed was more comfortable than the flip sofa on the floor. We also slowly moved the flip sofa further and further away from our bed. DD eventually went back to her room. She would try to come back every once in a while, but we consistently kept walking her back to her room in the middle of the night.

Sometimes it takes years no matter what to do ...hate to say it .... I went to a developmental pediatrician who when I asked her about this same thing said ( while turning pink/red faced) that her daughter slept with her in her bed until she was 10.Chat Icon

Re: need my toddler out of my bed

I honestly think the longer you wait the worse this issue gets. As much as it hurts you to do it, you have to tell him no and direct him back to his room. For the first few nights it will suck.

DD and I used to share a room when we lived with my parents for a year. She had just turned 1 when we lived there and turned 2 when we finally moved to be with DH. The first few nights sucked because it was the first time in a over a year she was alone in her room. She kept coming into my room at night. I would walk her back to her room and stay in there with her until she'd fall asleep. I explained to her that this was her big girl room and that it was so much cooler than mommy's room. I would put on a movie that she knew, and make a big deal over what a big girl she was. It took about a week for her to understand she was no longer allowed in my room and that this was her room.

Hang in there, and stick to your guns. Although it makes the situation uncomfortable for everyone involved it'll be worth it.

Re: need my toddler out of my bed

A 4 year old is no longer a toddler and should understand the words "no" "it's bedtime" and "goodnight, I'll see you in the morning."

I apologize for being harsh but I don't understand when people complain about kids sleeping in their beds or coming into their bed in the middle of the night. I mean if that is what you WANT then more power to you! If not, put them in the bed and that is it.

I dealt with two kids who didn't want to stay in bed at all, both around 3/4 years old. Of course it would have been easier to just let them in my bed but that would have created a habit that I didn't want to enforce. So I put them back in bed. It took several days with both of them (probably closer to 2 weeks with DD), kids are very stubborn Chat Icon but I am the parent, they don't get to manipulate me.

This was my SS and it as until he 11. When his dad and I moved in together he was 7 and would want to sleep with us. It took about a year and half to get him to sleep in the next room by himself without out waking us up. He stood sleeping with his mom till 11. Unfortunately, this is why my DS has never slept in my bed.

Eta: GL Op, I think you have to be consistent and some kids break the habit faster than others!

My DD is almost 7 and still sleeps in our room. We put a cot in here for her. As ridiculous as it sounds it is what it is. She is super attached.
