Help! Almost 16 month old doesn't sleep well!

He naps fine and goes down to bed just fine. But two or three hours into overnight sleep he is up and ready to party. If we are lucky enough to get him back down (which can take an hour or two) he will wake again. Im posting after having been up from 1-2 and since 445 straight. ive tried CIO and it just turns to hysterics...not a viable option for us. He is still in a crib...still wobbly when he walks so Im hesitant to transition him in case he tries to get up. He wants a bottle when he gets up (but doesn't take bottles during the day). Ive tried everything we can think of. Pls tell me what worked for you!!!

Has he always been like this? What does he do when he wakes up? Does he have animals, or anything in the crib for entertainment? Does he wake up calm or hysterical? Does he go to bed awake when you first put him down? If he wakes up calm, I would leave him and hopes he puts himself back to sleep. If he's hysterical, objects could help calm him- both of my kids got a soother from day 1 and older DS got stuffed animals around 10 months. If he knows how to get himself to sleep, it will be easier for him to do it if he's up in the middle of the night. Maybe he's sleeping too much in the day? Hopefully it's just a stage and he starts sleeping better soon!

I have a 16mo who has also been a horrible sleeper until very recently.
I started giving her water rather than nursing (or bottle) and if she wakes up i tell her firmly that its not time to wake up yet. I put on her projector.

my dr told me dont put them down when they are sleepy.do it before so they learn to put themselves to sleep on their own .

Thank you both! He's never really been a good sleeper - I can count on two hands how many times he's STTN since he was born. But it used to be a few minute up and a bottle or backrub and he was back to sleep. Now he's fully awake and ready to start the day. He has his favorite loveys in his crib - they are his go-to for comfort. Sometimes he puts himself down, sometimes he just can't get to sleep and I go in and comfort (I know that plays a part here - but sometimes it's the only way or he'll be awake and crying for hours) Sometimes he's hysterical when he wakes, sometimes he's just wimpering but if we don't go in the wimpering turns to hysterics. I've limited his naps to two hours during the day (sometimes he even gets up sooner). Just don't know what else to do - feels like we've tried it all!!

My 15 month old DS has also never been an excellent sleeper. I'd now classify him as fair-good depending upon the night. He now puts himself to sleep for naps and bedtime, which I think has improved his night sleep. He still usually cries for 1-5 minutes when I put him to bed for the night, but he eventually passes out. I'd probably try to work on that first. I think that is one major key to better night time sleeping.

What time does he nap? If I let DS sleep past 3:30-4, bedtime takes forever.

How is his eating? If DS doesn't eat well during the day, he's always looking to nurse at 2:30 am, which I am obviously not a fan of.

Also - I would probably not wake him up from naps unless it's getting late. I think sleep begets sleep. DS takes a 2-3 hour nap and sleeps better now than he did when he took a 90 minute nap.
