My biggest pet peeve is when friends don't respond to texts... I understand people work, get busy but after 2 days I am beyond annoyed. what's worse is if you see that friend posting all over FB.... They have time to do that but not to respond to a text... In my opinion that is just not nice...

I always respond to text by the end of the day.. I think that is appropriate.....

I agree. It's rude. Just rude.

Agreed. I know someone who is proud of the fact that she "never responds to anyone" how is.that even possible? Yet her phone is literally attached to her.
:

Because people like that think they look so "cool" and so important by not answering.
Like they are too busy and too good to answer a lowly text.
Like they are J Lo or something.

It's completely rude to not respond to someone. It takes all of a second to answer back, even if it's just a smiley face or a "K" just so the person knows you at least saw the text. I usually respond right away so I don't forget.

It's easier for me to read texts than respond, especially at work or when I'm with DD.

Sometimes I forget to respond. It happens.

Same here. If you need an answer right away, call me. I am more likely to answer my home or office phone. My cell phone is for convenience, half the time it's in my bag.

Text etiquette

I try to respond right away, if I can because I might forget to later on.

As for people not responding, I get that sometimes they just can't respond for whatever reason. So if they don't respond to hours later, I don't see a big deal. It happens.

Thanks everyone!

my 24 yo neighbor hasn't responded about dog sitting in 2 days even after I followed up. Maybe I have the wrong #!

Same here. I have a friend who when I am with her is always checking her texts. She is online dating so I know she is attached to her phone!

I think she and I are so busy and always trying to catch up and since we never have time in person or on phone we are forced to have text convos to stay in touch and it doesn't work.

I sometimes take a very long time to text back, but I'm not the type to keep checking my phone constantly. If I'm out with my family my phone is usually in my bag on silent unless I'm taking a picture. And I won't interrupt family time,to text or even call someone back unless it's something important. Or if I'm cooking or doing housework or something, I won't keep stopping to text. Whenever I have a little downtime I'll check my phone for texts, fb messages, etc, and I'll respond then.

This exactly. I get really annoyed when I am with people and they are constantly texting.

Re: Text etiquette

I think it totally depends on the nature of the texts.

Business texts require a tighter deadline. I would say those need to be acknowledged within 24 hours.

Other personal texts that are still time sensitive (i.e. are you definitely free Friday for dinner?) should also be responded to promptly, esp. when they only take a second.

Otherwise, a friendly hello how are you type of text, or a text that really should have been a phone call or email, is different. Some things are just not that urgent, and some people cannot really text during the day. I would never be offended if friendly banter was not replied to promptly.

I either text back immediately or take a while (24+ hours).

If I'm home, I am often not carrying my phone around. If I am out, I usually have my kids and/or with friends. My phone is usually in my purse. That doesn't mean that I did not click and read the text within a few hours. I may have my hands full and then forget, especially if it wasn't that important.

Same. I'm not a great texter. I respond quickly if it's convenient or important, otherwise I don't make it a huge priority. I consider it a very casual form of communication.

eta- I also find it insanely rude to be texting people when you're out with others.

I am not big on texting and I am known not to check for days. If someone needs me they need to call. MY life and world does not revolve around a phone. BUT I know that most people are the opposite so when someone who I know is always texting and does not reply to mine I call BS.lol

I'm a little OCD, so I have to respond ASAP. But I think as long as you respond by the end of the day, that's appropriate, to let it go longer, I would just assume the person isn't going to respond. I also find it rude, since as you said, phones are right next to you at all times. The exception is if you are away, or if you have a little baby and might forget about a text you received 5 minutes after you received it, lol.

Exactly this. Word for word lol

I agree exactly

I do take longer to text back if it's a work text or something like that. I see it, but I won't read it (where it says "Read: 8:59 AM") until I'm ready to respond. I try to respond within 24 hours unless I'm away on vacation or something like that.

Wait, the texter can see what time you read the text? I had no idea, if that's the case.

It's an Apple (iPhone) thing and you can then off that "feature" I have it turned off bc it makes me feel like my friends are stalking me lol it was also a blackberry thing but I don't even know if blackberry exists anymore. But it only works when you do Apple to Apple and Blaxkberry to Blackberry.

Ohh and to the OP, I agree that it's rude. Although I have a 3 week old baby and I've kinda been slacking on my responding to anybody whether it's phone calls, emails or texts.

ITA with both of the above. I also work, so while I might be able to glance at a new text sometimes, I cannot respond. Has nothing to do with being "too cool".

Re: Text etiquette

I'm the worst text responder. It isn't my fault 100% though, I literally JUST got a smart phone 3 days ago and texting on my old phone was annoying. But sometimes I have nothing to reply so I just don't.
