How do I?

Naturally unclog my ear?

I had that stupid virus last week, and once that started going away, I guess I got a sinus infection, or just a new manifestation of the virus. My sinuses aren't that bad, and my nose isn't super stuffy (I have a ton of drip at night and cough badly in the morning), but my left ear is so clogged I can't hear! I also have no voice, which isn't horrible, and a sore throat, which I am loving honey for (no strep, checked last Thursday). What are the best things I can do to help facilitate unclogging of my ear?

Clogged ears are no fun. Chat Icon

These are all suggestions from my ear doc:

- Yawning. Once you start hearing a crackle sound in your ear, that means the fluid is moving around and will eventually start to drain.

- Swallowing.

- Chewing gum or sucking on a lollipop

- Lay the affected side on a heating pad or use warm compresses.

It will still take a while, but this can help facilitate the movement of the fluid. She recommends against using valsalva maneuvers (pinching your nose and blowing, that sort of thing)... she says it can result in perforation if done too harshly.

Also, some people swear by using a neti pot.

Good luck and feel better! Chat Icon

This and a rubber bulb ear syringe were the only natural remedies that worked for me.

ETA: I used lukewarm water and peroxide to flush the ear with the syringe.
