baby w allergies
my 15 month has cat allergies, where he gets a rash and itchy eyes
when we spoke w the pediatrician he suggests only giving him benadryl to make him feel better, which indeed it does
They do not be live in sending him to an allergy doc due to shots, and other painful testing's. He feels its unnecessary at his age.
Looking for other mom suggestions, would you step it up and go for further testing or continue with benadryl ?
My son goes to a daycare so its hard to separate him w kids who may have cats
What would you as a mom do? I am so torn

I don't think I'd see an allergist unless I thought my kid had other allergies. But I also wouldn't give Benadryl every day just to send my kid to daycare.

I am allergic to cats. But if I am at a party with other people who are cat owners I won't have a reaction. Sounds like he's allergic to something else. I would def go to a ped allergist. And no one will give him shots! They'll do an allergy scratch test. It's a quick prick on the back with plastic. It doesn't actually break the skin. Further blood work can be done if anything shows up on this initial test.
Oh and I would find a new ped. Drugging your 1yo daily with Benadryl is the worst advice ever. He should be suggesting getting to the root of the problem which is allergy testing. Also if he hasn't been tested how do you know it's cats? And if he's allergic to cats chances are he may have more than one allergy!

My girls have cat, dog, and severe seasonal allergies as well as oral allergy syndrome. My old pediatrician always felt my girls were too young to have seasonal allergies...we saw an allergist anyway and were able to get good advice on treating effectively. I would see the allergist.

I am not 100% sure but it seems like these episodes happen when i know he has been in direct contract w a cat.
But overall i would want to know if there were other things he would be allergic to

From my PERSONAL experience with cat allergies, he will build a tolerance.
When I first got my kitties I was horribly allergic.
I took zyrtec or claritin daily.
Over time, my body built up a resistance- which is what allergy shots actually do for you
So I am willing to bet your DC will eventually build a tolerance to your cats.
I still get itchy around other cats, but I am fine around my own.
I would give the Benedryl when needed and I bet eventually DC will be fine around your own cats.

I personally see Dr Goldstein in Rockviolle Center
He is a Pediatric doc as well

I'd see an allergist. DS, 14 months, has moderate eczema and I took him to an allergist last week. I cut dairy, eggs, nuts, and strawberries from our diets and he had no major improvements so this to me was the next logical step. He would have had a scratch test done but he was having an awful flare up so we're going back next week. On Monday, I took him for a blood test.
I didn't even consult with my pediatrician; I just booked the appointment.

Not to hijack but have you tried a high quality probiotic daily? I give my dd double doses daily and if she is on an anti-biotic I quadruple the dose. She has eczema which I believe is related to leaky gut syndrome as I also tried an elimination diet without success.
She also broke out into allergic reactions many times which is why I sought out a pediatric allergist. We went to dr strauss in Commack.

I would take him to an allergist. Ds developed a banana allergy at 7 months old and I took him to see one near me in nj. They did not do any shots. It was a skin test.

They did my girls' on their back. It wasn't so bad. We didn't have a blood test done as it seemed unnecessary.

It can take a a few weeks for the protein in dairy to leave the system. I would continue to eliminate those items. Dairy would include anything cheese or butter flavor too.
I would also keep a journal of what you are feeding him.

Your Ped. over exaggerated! I have been taking my kids to the allergist for years. DD#1 had her first appointment at 6 months.
They might order a blood test but you can get a false positive with that. You cant just go by that. A skin test is the most accurate. On an infant they usually do the back because it has the largest surface area and it is harder for them to reach around and scratch. It sits on for 10 minutes and thats it.
It can be done 2 ways:
1.) the clean the area with alcohol, then they label the back with a pen with numbers. Each number will be associated to an allergen. They will drop the allergen then prick the skin.
2.) clean the area again, then on what looks like a peg board puts the allergen on the pegs and they press it in the skin.
Neither hurt.
I agree with the PP who said that giving benedryl is a bad idea. That is not how it is meant to be used. If the cat is in your house I would try and limit where the cat goes. Maybe keep him out of 2 or 3 rooms. Vaccumm maybe 2-3 times a day and wipe stuff down. If the cat is at someone else's house, I would limit contact and constantly wipe his hands. When you leave change his clothes and then give a bath.

Definitely see a pediatric allergist. The skin test is not painful and takes like 1second to administer. You wait for 15 minutes, the Dr. Looks at it and assesses/measures the sie of the wheals (hives). Not a big deal at all. At least you will be able to identify the triggers.

There are many reasons to see an allergist and there really aren't many reasons not to. First, you aren't totally sure it's a cat allergy. Second, where there's one allergy there are often more. I have a very severe cat allergy. At this point I just tell my doctor that I still have reactions and he does not test me for cats. If you were sure of what it was the doctor may not even test or they may test to find out how severe it is. My Dr. knows what my results were in the past and there's no reason to keep pricking me with something that will cause a reaction. He gives me eyedrops and skin cremes and I would really suffer without them. Also if a cat allergy is bad enough that you react when it's on someone else's clothing, then it's pretty severe. I don't generally go anywhere where there is a cat but I've had reactions from taking my dog to the vet, at Petsmart and at peoples houses when I know will be sitting outside but I just have to go into use the bathroom. That's how I know I'm still allergic. Allergists don't always give shots. Even when they recommend them, they give you the option not to take them anyway. Also with the newer treatments it could be a sublingual type of thing. An allergist might be able to tell you if the reaction sounds like it's something that may become worse or better in time. My cat allergy got worse with every exposure for many years and now it just stays the same.

PS.... The discomfort of the test is not as bad to me as the symptoms of an allergic reaction. A daily medication like Claritin will help. It may not give the same benefit as Benadryl but it won't have the same side effects either.

I know. I eliminated ALL dairy even hidden dairy and may contain dairy for 21 days with no success.

I totally agree...my kids are different (happier) people on daily allergy meds (claritin and flonase).
