Cash. However if I am close with the bride. I always give the Waterford ring holder along with the gift. That's my go to engagement gift.

A go to gift of mine is Tiffany wine glasses (they are riedel brand but purchased through Tiffany because I love the presentation) and a bottle of wine. The glasses are relatively inexpensive I think 2 for $20.
You can do toasting flutes. A picture frame, although tough if you don't know their taste. An acacia wood Salad bowl
Gift card to cooking class at Sur La Table is nice too.
You can't go wrong with a basket of goodies either. Look on pinterest you'll get a million ideas.

Re: Engagement party
Cash.
If you are more inclined to get a gift, I loved the ring holder I got. I also got an engraved marriage certificate holder - it's a cylindrical tube on a stand. I love it because whenever I need our marriage certificate, I actually know exactly where it is.
