Newborn Advice

This is what we are dealing with right now:

DS is clearly uncomfortable.
He's not sleeping as long in between feedings
He's not eating as much at each feeding
When he does eat he either cries and struggles to eat, seems to be in pain or he falls asleep after an ounce it two. I try to continue feeding him but it just falls out of his mouth.
He hiccups
Sometimes he chokes
Sometimes he projectile vomits although that hasn't happened in a while
He kicks his feet a lot when I'm trying to burp him

I'm guessing it's some sort of reflux, I'm taking him to dr tomorrow. I just wanted to hear some others experience so I kind of know what to expect.
How would they know it's reflux? What would they do for it if it were?

How old is he?

I went through it with my dd. Started around 3 weeks. It does sound like symptoms of reflux.
A lot of times they eat smaller amount more often because the formula acts as an acid cutter to them. It soothes their throat so they want to eat BUT then it hurts them so they don't eat a lot.
My dd would spit up so bad it came out of her mouth and nose, would stop breathing. Used to scare me to death.
She used to wake in the middle of the night and be sooo uncomfortable she couldn't sleep and would just cry. She would be kicking her legs and wiggling around.

It could also be the formula, what kind is he on? My dd eventually went on Zantac (for reflux) and Alimentum Formula (hypoallegnic) because she had a dairy proten (casein) sensitivity.

They may give you Axid to start, she started on that (which I fought and wasn't happy about but she was in so much pain I wanted her to feel better) It worked for a while then ended up stop working. My dr would have to up the dose every 2 weeks because she was growing and then at some point it stopped working. We changed meds a few times and formulas before finding the right combo. My dd insensitivity was much worse than the reflux and for her the formula change was the key.

Don't be nervous it happens to a lot of us. It happened to most of my friends as well with their kids. Just always talk and ask questions, seeking advice and support from friends helps too. Its how I ended up pushing to change my dd formula.

They may give you meds and they give you an antacid. I think it depends on the age of the baby.
Try burping after 1 oz.
Keep him upright for 20 min after a feeding.
Try not to let him sleep flat, keep him on an angle. My dd slept in the rock n play.

My first became fussy around 1 month, we tried a bunch of formula to find which one works for him also as soon as old enough (I think 7 weeks? ) we swear by mommy bliss gripe water and the rock and play sleeper ( but transition to crib was bad)

He was on similac and I recently switched to gerber good start gentle.
He sleeps in the rock and play.
Ironically he likes to lay flat on his back on the playmat although we don't always put him there

It's reflux. All babies have it to some degree, though it usually comes out around a month if it's really bothering them. DS had it and was on Zantac as well as Nutramigen (formula). DD is 3.5 weeks old and we just started her on Axid for her reflux. She's still on Enfamil formula and seems to be ok on that for now. The Axid has helped tremendously.

A lot of my friends have had to switch formulas. A few even got a prescription for a sensitive version. I breast fed and we went through phases where she would hysterically scream red in the face for 15m or so after a feeding. I cut broccoli, beans, my decaf coffee, all dairy to see if anything made a difference and it never did. Eventually she grew out of it at maybe 3mos or so. I think all babies just have immature digestive systems.

I remember I used those infant drops, mylicon I believe and I don't know if they actually worked or me squirting something in her mouth startled her (maybe she liked the taste?) but they definitely seemed to help.

I know it's so horrible when they scream like that but it will pass!

My DD went through this too....first know this will pass and you will get through this bc I remember those nights and how hard it can be.

She had a little bit of reflux that we were able to fix with a tiny bit of rice cereal in her formula. My doctor didn't want to jump to meds right away and luckily we didn't have to bc it worked. You would have to talk to your doctor about this bc not all doctors agree on this.

She also had a milk protein allergy which was causing a lot of the screaming, have your doc test his stool. We tried 4 different formulas before we finally switched her to alliumentum.

DD on top of all of this had gas as well. We tried gas drops but unfortunately for her we needed to wait it out but by 4 months she was such a happy baby and everything had stopped! She outgrew her allergy at 16 months

My DS had issues too and eventually we ended up on Alimentum, which worked well for him. A pediatric GI can rule out a milk protein allergy.

Sounds like reflux or milk protein allergy. DD began at 3 weeks and was arching at feedings and not eating. It was mild reflux and protein allergy. We switched to alimentum so she ate. Still spit up although she had axid meds. It lasted til she sat up better then she was fine on alimentum. We stopped that at 9 mo and she was ok.

thanks for all the advice. per said it was def reflux and colic. there was some blood in his stool. he put ds on zantac and alimentum. lets hope this helps

My ds was like that he needed axid

We also switched formulas. Burped after every ounce feeding. Slept on incline.

Did baby yoga and he had gas drops before and after every bottle

Also fed slowly.

We took DS off his reflux meds at 7ish months, but he was much better once he was more mobile, sitting up and on solids.
