wWYD- requesting your child not be with another in school?
DS is starting kindergarten in fall. He is in preK now with one kid who is not a good influence and the kid often gets in trouble. Bc they r young I've been able to avoid play dates and encouraged him to play with different kids- trying to steer him away without saying anything of course. There is chane they could be in same kindergarten class and I wouldn't be happy. But I also don't know that I should start out at school with asking a favor/request- what if I need another one down the road? DS is my first to start school. Opinions? Advice? Another mom said I should say something but make it casual- to say "if possible please keep apart etc but I understand no promises..." There are five kindergarten classes so it's possible they wont be together but again really worried if they r. TIA

If there is a history between the 2 boys, I would request they not be together. I think they put more weight into their decision if there is a specific reason behind them not being together. It doesn't hurt to ask.

wWYD- requesting your child not be with another in school?
Id ask.
AJ is on record for 2nd grade not to be with a certain girl in her class. They seem to have less issue getting two NOT in class together than they are asked to put two in the class together (like bffs etc).
Also the roster is out for us the week before. You can review and change your child if necessary but you can't ask for a replacement teacher. So say AJ is in class with the monster, I can say "move AJ" but I can't say move her to a certain teacher. I can just ask they reassign her.

It doesn't sound as if your DC has had issues with this boy, but that you think he is a bad influence and don't want your child around him.
Honestly, I would leave it alone and see where your child is placed next year. There is always at least one "troublemaker" in every class.... if it isn't this little boy it will be another.
I think its more important to teach your child from a young age that just because he sees someone doing something wrong/getting in trouble doesn't make it ok for him to do the same. You can't shelter them from every "bad" child.

What kind of trouble is he getting into?
Are you going to request he not be with this child for the duration of his schooling? If they both remain in the same school until they are older, they will be together at some point.
DS has two little friends in his class that need time outs several times a day. He mentions that so and so had to take a rest on the fence while they were out on the playground etc. He tells me that they 'were bad'. I correct him and tell him they just had a hard time listening today.
I know one of the children has a difficult home life - the mom is not in the picture, the dad was involved in a really bad accident and requires heavy PT daily. He is raised by his aunt and grandparents. I don't want DS to judge him based on his actions in school - especially at this age.
I tell DS that he has to listen to his teacher and that if so and so chooses not to that is their choice. He knows the consequences if he chooses not to as well.

I agree unless there is an actual incident with the boy I would leave it be, it's true there will always be someone in the class you would rather your child not play with and are you going to make a request every year,

Re: wWYD- requesting your child not be with another in school?
What you're all saying makes sense. It's not that he gets in trouble with him- DS is good about following rules at school/ although the boy doesn't listen well and is often "in trouble". It's more the things he says to DS- telling him things that he learned from his older brother or stupid things that undermine what I tell him. We always talk about it and I set the record straight but he seems to idolize this kid. He was giving him toys (toys I dont buy) which I spoke to the mom about and she didn't seem to care. I know I can't keep him in a bubble - just this one kid gets under my skin and he's on the bus with him/ but won't be next year. I think I'll just see what class he's in and take it from there. I also even though they r asking haven't done any playdate nor will I ever. Thanks for the advice!

Re: wWYD- requesting your child not be with another in school?
I would leave it alone - I assume your child is still going to be interacting with the other child at recess and at lunchtimes plus common events such as assemblies and school functions. It might be better to have them in the same class so the teacher can help them learn how to behave together.
My DS tends to get in trouble when he spends time with a specific child in his K class. His teacher and I have tried to explain that his decisions about whom he sits next to, whom he plans with at recess, and whom he decides to pal around with in the classroom will affect how he behaves and that he should make smart choices about where he sits and whom he plays with (and how he plays with them). I've heard from parents in other classes that this same child also affects their children so it didn't matter if my son was in class with him or not - KWIM?
